Job Summary
Progressive Care Unit (PCU) Registered Nurse Bangor, Maine
The Progressive Care Unit (PCU) Registered Nurse provides intermediate-level nursing care for a patient population that includes Trauma Level II cases, neuro patients requiring frequent monitoring, and complex Medical/Surgical and Cardiac conditions. This role supports day and night shift coverage with unit-based coordination, including responsibilities that may involve charge coverage as needed. Candidates are required to bring their license on the first day.
Job Details
- Shift: Nights (12 hours); minimum 36 hours per week
- Schedule: Shift times are 07001930 or 19000730, with weekend rotation every other weekend; may include low census call back
- Required Qualifications: Basic Life Support (BLS); Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS); National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS); intermediate Progressive Care Unit (PCU) level of care experience (or Medical/Surgical experience with some PCU experience) as specified in the role requirements; valid license (must be brought on the first day)
- Preferred Qualifications: Acute Care in Critical Care Nursing (ACCCN) (preferred); Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) (preferred)
- Clinical Responsibilities: Provides intermediate-level care for Trauma Level II patients, including neuro/stroke cases requiring Q2H neuro checks; supports Medical/Surgical patients with respiratory and post-operative needs such as long-term trachs on vents and respiratory failure requiring Bipap or high-flow oxygen; supports Cardiac patient care needs including post-procedure monitoring and cardiac rhythm interpretation; manages delegated unit support needs including CNA support (ratio 1:612), with potential for charge nurse assignment as needed
- Skills and Unit Support: Participates in care requiring assessment and intervention for high-flow oxygen, Bipap support, chest tubes, wound vac/VAC dressing changes, general drain/ostomy care, and IV starts; supports trach care and suctioning, including administering 100% FiO2 via suction support and silence alarms (RT education provided); supports Cardiac care needs including temporary pacemakers, TR bands, post-femoral sheath care, and cardiac rhythm interpretation; may be required to support insulin titration and cardiac drips when applicable (decline travelers without insulin/cardiac gtt experience)
- Drips and Cardiac Monitoring: Supports Cardiac infusion therapies as applicable, including amiodarone and diltiazem infusions
- Patient Types: Trauma patients including neuro cases such as stable craniotomies (coils or clips) and stroke/neuro monitoring; seizure precautions and Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment (CIWA) considerations; Medical/Surgical respiratory illnesses (COVID/Flu/pneumonia) and COPD exacerbation; post-op General Surgery and Sepsis; Cardiac conditions including STEMI/NSTEMI, CHF, AFib with RVR, and post cardiac procedure monitoring such as TAVR (24 hours post-op)
- Assignment Flexibility (Float): May be floated to the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, or Coronary Care Unit if an intermediate assignment is available in one of those departments
- Orientation: Completion of general hospital orientation followed by one day on the unit
- Submission/Selection Notes: Candidates must have completed at least two (2) 13-week assignments to qualify as a first-time traveler; trauma/Neuro requirements include trauma experience and experience with stroke patients and Q2H neuro checks; charge experience is expected to be discussed during screening and included in the offer information as applicable
