Description
Job Summary:
Pediatric Psychology (PEDS PSYCH) in Bangor, Maine. This position involves providing behavioral health nursing care to a pediatric inpatient psychiatric population in a free-standing acute inpatient facility. Candidates are required to bring their license on the first day. The role presents an excellent opportunity for first-time travelers. The assignment is scheduled to start on 07/20/2026.
Job Details:
- Location: Bangor, ME
- Shift: Nights, 12 hours per shift, with a schedule cycle of modified self-scheduling; including day shifts during orientation week and 12-hour night shifts thereafter.
- Minimum Years of Experience: 0 years (additional details specify 1 year of Behavioral Health nursing required, pediatric behavioral health experience preferred).
- Required Qualifications: Valid Maine State License, BLS (Basic Life Support) certification; experience with de-escalation, physical restraint techniques (chemical restraints NOT used), medication passes, group facilitation, and thorough documentation. Experience in Behavioral Health nursing for at least 1 year is required.
- Preferred Qualifications: Pediatric behavioral health experience.
- Support on the Unit: Nurse Supervisor (evenings/weekends), Nurse Manager (days), House Administrator (overnight/weekends), and other clinical staff including nurse practitioners, psychiatrists, occupational therapists, and contracted support staff.
- Additional Information: Floating is required between all units, both adult and pediatrics. Orientation includes facility and unit training during the first week. Travelers may function as charge nurses if desired. Holiday work in rotation is expected. Heavy winter snow conditions anticipated.
- Patient Types & Diagnoses: Pediatric patients aged 5-18 with diagnoses including eating disorders, depression, suicidal ideation, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and oppositional defiant disorder. Adult patients aged 18+ with schizophrenia, major depression, bipolar disorder, and other conditions. No forensic or inmate patients. Patients are medically cleared upon arrival, and the facility is locked but not to the extent of holding patients under arrest.
- Patient Ratios: Night RN: 13 patients supported by resource staff; day RN: 5-6 patients. Psych Tech ratios vary between day and night shifts for both pediatric and adult units.
- Charting System/Equipment: Cerner electronic health record; Pyxis medication management.
- Other Notes: Scrub color is flexible but must be professional; heavy snow expected during winter. There is a strong emphasis on de-escalation training, with scenario-based practice every other week and MOAB (Management of Aggressive Behavior) training provided on site.
