The Alexandria, Virginia-based Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) registered nurse position involves providing specialized care to patients recovering from anesthesia in a busy hospital environment. This assignment is with an agency agency, requiring candidates to bring their nursing license on the first day. The role offers a full-time schedule with variable start times, and candidates must be prepared to work rotating shifts and participate in a structured on-call rotation.
Job Details:
- Position: Registered Nurse (RN) Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)
- Location: Alexandria, Virginia
- Schedule: Full-time, 36 hours/week, Monday through Friday; shifts typically 9 or 12 hours with start times varying based on operational needs.
- Shift Length: 8 hours
- Minimum Hours Per Week: 40.0 hours
- Start Date: 07/06/2026
- Required Qualifications: Active RN license in the Commonwealth of Virginia or active multistate compact (NLC) license; BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications; minimum 2 years PACU RN experience required; strong perianesthesia background preferred; EMR experience with Epic preferred; flexibility to work variable start times, early starts in PreOp, and participation in on-call rotations.
- Float: First to float between PreOp, ECT, Endoscopy (no intraoperative Endoscopy coverage).
- Additional Information: Assignment duration is 10 weeks; candidates must pass the ECG exam on Day 2 of orientation (pass/fail, one attempt); attendance at a pre-start study session is strongly recommended; call rotation includes holiday coverage; on-call commitments include weekday and weekend/holiday shifts, self-scheduled within a structured rotation; holiday coverage includes the day before and possibly the day after the scheduled holiday.
- Patient Population: Adult patients (age 10+) across various surgical specialties; pediatric experience helpful but not required.
- Unit Details: PACU with 13 bays (10 Phase 1, 3 Phase 2); patient ratios are 2:1 in Phase 1 and 3:1 in Phase 2; common cases include orthopedic, spine, general surgery, vascular, plastics, urology, ENT, GI endoscopy.
