Job Summary:
The Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) registered nurse position is located in Alexandria, Virginia. This role involves providing specialized care to surgical patients in a fast-paced environment, including Preoperative, Postoperative, and Endoscopy recovery areas. Candidates must bring their active nursing license on the first day and have a minimum of two years of PACU nursing experience with a strong perianesthesia background preferred.
Job Details:
- Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required; Epic Electronic Medical Record (EMR) preferred.
- Education and Experience: Active RN license in the Commonwealth of Virginia or an active multistate compact (NLC) license; minimum of 2 years PACU RN experience required; strong perianesthesia background preferred.
- Schedule: Full-time, 36 hours per week, Monday through Friday; shift length varies between 9-hour and 12-hour shifts, with start times typically between 5:30 AM and 9:00 PM. Coverage extends from 5:30 AM to 9:00 PM daily, with variable start times based on operational needs.
- Float: First to float between PreOp, ECT, and Endoscopy, but not intraoperative ECT or Endoscopy.
- On-Call: Rotating 2nd Call commitment every 6 weeks, including 3 weekend/holiday shifts and 3 weekday shifts; call shifts scheduled within a structured rotation.
- Call Details: Weekday call from 9:00 PM to 5:30 AM (8.5 hours); weekend/holiday day call from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM or night call from 8:00 PM to 8:00 AM (12 hours).
- Unit Details: PACU has 13 bays (10 Phase 1, 3 Phase 2), caring for inpatient and outpatient surgical patients across multiple specialties. Population served includes patients aged 10 and older. Ratios: Phase 1 at 2:1; Phase 2 at 3:1.
- Common Cases: Total joint arthroplasty, spine, orthopedic sports medicine, general surgery, vascular, plastics, urology, ENT, ECT, and GI endoscopy.
- Duration: 10-week assignment starting July 6, 2026.
- Additional Information: Candidates are required to pass a Day 2 ECG exam; attendance at a pre-start study session is strongly recommended. Call rotation includes observed holidays.
