Description

Job Summary:
Pediatric Intensive Care Unit Open Heart (PICU OH) located in a teaching hospital with a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center. This position involves caring for high-acuity pediatric patients, including those with congenital heart differences who have undergone surgery or require advanced cardiac support. The role emphasizes teamwork and expertise in pediatric cardiac critical care.

Job Details:

  • Schedule: Nights shift, 12 hours per shift, minimum of 36 hours per week.
  • Required Qualifications: Valid licensure, BLS, PALS, NIHSS certifications, at least 2 years of Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (ICU) experience in a similar facility.
  • Patient Types/Common Diagnoses: High-acuity pediatric patients aged 0-18 years with congenital heart conditions, post-surgical recovery, transplant management, and use of devices such as Aquadex (renal replacement therapy), Impella, and ECMO.
  • Patient Ratios: Variable, generally 1:1, 1:2, or 2:1 depending on patient acuity.
  • Support within the Department: One health care technician support staff per shift, unit secretary on every shift, charge nurse, resource nurse, RT (respiratory therapist), cardiologist, intensivist, and telemetry monitoring tech available 24/7.
  • Technology/Equipment: EPIC electronic medical record, Alaris infusion pumps, Omnicell medication dispensers, Phillips monitors, bedside and centralized telemetry monitoring.
  • Float: Staff may float to Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, or General Pediatrics as needed.
  • Orientation: Two days departmental orientation.
  • Scheduling: Every other weekend or fewer, with a rotation cycle every 6 weeks.
  • Other Notes: Scrub color navy, free parking, team-oriented unit culture emphasizing teamwork, trust, and accountability.
  • Support for Duties: In-house phlebotomy (not utilized for patients with central lines), IV/VAT team available, support from cardiologists, intensivists, and respiratory therapists on call.
  • Shift Times: 06:45 PM - 06:45 AM and 06:45 AM - 06:45 PM.
  • Start Date: 09/14/2026
  • End Date: 03/13/2027
