Job Summary
The Surgical Technician (Operating Room Technician) in College Station, TX, is responsible for assisting in the intra-operative phase of patient care to facilitate surgical procedures. This role supports the surgical team by handling equipment and instrumentation, ensuring a safe operating room environment, and verifying all necessary supplies and tools are prepared and functioning correctly.
Job Details
- Certifications, Education, and Experience: BLS (AHA Only), CST (NBSTSA or NCCT); grandfathered candidates are accepted. Minimum of 2 years of experience in a surgical technology role.
- Schedule: Dayshift, 4x10-hour shifts from 6:30 AM to 5:00 PM, with a minimum of 40 hours per week. Call required: 3-4 weekdays (1700-0700); 1 weekend 1st call and 1 weekend 2nd call (24 hours 0700-0700).
- Responsibilities:
- Discusses any special needs with the surgeon before surgery and scrubs in for procedures.
- Prepares the operative site by aseptically cleaning and clipping patient as needed.
- Maintains organized and comprehensive instrument trays to avoid damage and ensure proper counts.
- Sets up the operating room according to surgical schedules, arranging sterile supplies and equipment.
- Ensures the proper functioning of surgical instruments and supplies during procedures.
- Performs surgical counts of sponges, sharps, and instruments according to policies.
- Anticipates the needs of the surgical team and assists with draping, positioning, and passing sterile supplies.
- Receives and verifies surgical specimens following protocol.
- Assists with dressing placement post-surgery.
- Disassembles instrumentation and ensures proper sterilization, cleaning, and disposal of materials.
- Cleans the operating room following each case and returns equipment to storage.
- Follows infection control policies and safety guidelines to maintain a safe work environment.
- Additional Information: Successful completion of a nationally accredited surgical technologist program or equivalent formal training is required. Knowledge of infection prevention, sterile techniques, and human anatomy is essential. Good communication and interpersonal skills are necessary to interact effectively with the surgical team.
