Description
A Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) is a healthcare professional who performs routine laboratory tests and analyses on patient samples, such as blood, urine, and tissue, to assist in the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of various medical conditions. MLTs work under the supervision of a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or laboratory manager, following established protocols and ensuring the accuracy and quality of test results.

Sample Collection and Preparation:

- Collect, label, and process patient specimens, including blood, urine, and tissue samples. \n
- Ensure proper handling, storage, and transportation of specimens to avoid contamination or degradation. \n
- Prepare samples for analysis, including centrifugation, preparing slides for microscopy, and separating serum or plasma as required. \n

Performing Laboratory Tests:

- Conduct routine laboratory tests in hematology, microbiology, clinical chemistry, immunology, and urinalysis, among others. \n
- Operate laboratory instruments and equipment, including microscopes, analyzers, and automated machines, to perform tests. \n
- Analyze test results, compare them with normal ranges, and document findings accurately. \n
- Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) for each test to ensure accuracy and reliability of results. \n

Quality Control and Assurance:

- Perform routine quality control (QC) checks on laboratory equipment, reagents, and test results to ensure accuracy. \n
- Troubleshoot and address any issues or discrepancies in test results or equipment. \n
- Document quality control results and make adjustments as necessary to maintain accuracy in testing. \n

Data Entry and Documentation:

- Enter and maintain accurate test results in the laboratory information system (LIS) or patient medical records. \n
- Maintain detailed records of tests, results, and patient information in compliance with regulatory standards and hospital policies. \n
- Ensure proper documentation for all laboratory procedures, including patient results, quality control checks, and equipment maintenance. \n

Laboratory Equipment Maintenance:

- Calibrate, maintain, and clean laboratory equipment to ensure it is functioning properly. \n
- Identify and report equipment malfunctions to supervisors or the biomedical engineering team for repairs. \n
- Maintain inventories of reagents, supplies, and equipment, and ensure that they are well-stocked and ready for use. \n

Collaboration and Communication:

- Collaborate with laboratory staff, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure the appropriate handling of patient samples and the timely delivery of results. \n
- Communicate abnormal test results to the appropriate clinical staff and assist in the interpretation of the results. \n
- Participate in team meetings to discuss lab performance, new procedures, and improvements. \n

- Follow infection control protocols to prevent contamination and ensure patient and staff safety. \n
