Description
An Orthopedic Technician (Orth Tech) is a specialized healthcare professional who assists orthopedic surgeons and other healthcare providers in the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of patients with musculoskeletal conditions. Orth Techs play a critical role in applying and removing casts, splints, braces, and other orthopedic devices, while also assisting with patient care in both clinical and surgical settings. They ensure that patients receive the appropriate orthopedic care, follow-up, and rehabilitation.
Key Responsibilities:

Patient Care and Preparation:
- Assist in preparing patients for orthopedic procedures, such as applying or removing casts, splints, or braces.
- Provide support and guidance to patients on the care and maintenance of orthopedic devices.
- Educate patients on proper mobility, pain management, and how to care for their cast, brace, or splint at home.
- Observe and monitor patients for signs of complications (e.g., infection, skin irritation) and report concerns to the orthopedic team.

Casting and Splinting:
- Apply, remove, and adjust casts, splints, and braces according to the physician’s instructions.
- Measure and fit orthopedic devices such as ankle-foot orthotics (AFO), knee braces, or arm slings to ensure proper function and comfort for the patient.
- Cut, mold, and apply materials such as fiberglass or plaster to create customized casts for fractures or injuries.
- Educate patients on the proper care of their cast or splint to prevent complications, such as skin breakdown or infection.

Assisting in Orthopedic Procedures:
- Assist orthopedic surgeons and other medical professionals during minor surgical procedures, including those related to fractures, joint dislocations, or soft tissue injuries.
- Sterilize and prepare surgical instruments, ensuring a sterile field during orthopedic surgeries.
- Provide instruments or supplies to the surgical team during procedures as needed.

Patient Monitoring and Follow-Up:
- Monitor patients in the clinic or post-surgical setting, observing for any signs of complications such as infection, swelling, or discomfort.
- Assist with wound care, including dressing changes and monitoring for infection at surgical sites or cast openings.
- Maintain records of treatments, procedures, and follow-up care for patients, ensuring all information is documented accurately in patient files.

Orthopedic Equipment Management:
- Ensure the correct orthopedic equipment and devices are available and properly functioning.
- Order, maintain, and sterilize orthopedic supplies such as casting materials, splints, braces, and surgical instruments.
- Keep an inventory of orthopedic supplies and manage stock levels to ensure availability when needed.

Patient Education:
- Educate patients and their families about orthopedic conditions, injury prevention, and the care of their devices.
- Provide instructions on performing exercises or activities to aid in rehabilitation or healing, such as weight-bearing restrictions or mobility exercises.
- Ensure patients understand signs of complications (e.g., swelling, skin irritation) and when to seek additional care.

- Schedule patient appointments and coordinate follow-up care after orthopedic procedures or treatments.
- Assist with patient flow and ensure that the orthopedic clinic operates efficiently by managing patient intake and processing insurance information.
- Maintain accurate patient records, including clinical notes, device fitting details, and follow-up instructions.
