🧪 Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) – Job Description

Job Overview

The MLS is responsible for the prompt and accurate performance of laboratory work across various divisions, ensuring quality control, compliance, and patient safety.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform routine and specialized lab tests across divisions.
• Ensure quality control (QC) standards are met before releasing results.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area.
• Train and supervise new lab staff and students.
• Evaluate testing personnel per CLIA requirements.
• Participate in on-call rotations as needed.
• Operate and troubleshoot Laboratory Information Systems (LIS).
• Follow procedures for specimen handling, processing, and reporting.
• Document QC activities, calibrations, and maintenance.
• Identify and resolve issues affecting test performance.
• Complete annual competency assessments.
• Support performance improvement initiatives.
• May serve as section head per CLIA guidelines.
• Perform other duties as assigned by lab leadership.

Qualifications

• Certification: Must be certified or eligible as MLS (ASCP), MLT (AMT), or HHS certified.
• Must qualify as a general supervisor under CLIA regulations.
• Certification required within 1 year of hire.

Physical & Environmental Requirements

• Frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting (up to 34 lbs).
