Travel RN – Cardiac Telemetry (3N) – Unit 3N (Cost Center 14)
Unit Information
- Unit Name: 3N – Cardiac Telemetry
- Cost Center: 14
- Bed Count: 43 beds (Semi-private; 9–10 private rooms)
- Typical Patient Ratios:
- RN: 1:5 (can flex up to 1:6)
- PCTs: Goal 1:8, but can flex up to 1:12–18 depending on staffing
Common Diagnoses / Patient Population
- Post-cardiac catheterizations (post heart caths)
- TR bands
- Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
- Post pacemaker placements (no external pacers)
- Medical management or awaiting CABG consult
- Arrhythmias
Required Skills & Experience
- ✅ Must be able to read telemetry strips
- ✅ Comfortable managing cardiac/telemetry patients
- ✅ RN’s expected to perform EKGs if PCTs are unavailable
Drips & Monitoring
- Are RNs required to titrate drips? Yes, but only Heparin
- Common Drips:
- Titrated: Heparin, occasional Lasix or Bumex
- Set Rate (Not titrated): Cardizem, Amiodarone
- Monitor Techs: Yes – central monitoring station for the entire North Tower
- RNs must still read their own telemetry strips
Staffing & Support
- Charge Nurse:
- On days: Available 24/7, generally without assignment, but may take patients based on unit needs
- On nights: Always has a patient assignment
- Travelers may act as Charge RN if experienced and willing
- PCTs: Assist with ADLs, FSBS, EKGs (when able)
- Unit Clerk: Present on unit
- Teamwork Focus: Strong culture of teamwork and support, especially important due to high patient turnover
Equipment
- High Flow Oxygen: Occasionally used (in specific rooms)
- BiPAP/CPAP: Supportive therapy only – not for long-term dependency. Patients needing long-term use are transferred to higher acuity units
Scheduling Details
- Shifts: 12-hour shifts
- Day: 07:00–19:30
- Night: 19:00–07:30
- Self-Scheduling: Yes – block scheduling available if unit needs are met
- Weekend Requirement:
- Travelers: Every other weekend (EOW)
- Days: Saturday/Sunday
- Nights: Friday/Saturday/Sunday/Monday
- Holiday Requirement:
- Permanent staff follow a holiday rotation
- Travelers may be asked to work holidays based on staffing needs
Call / Standby Requirements
- Rare; could occur if census is low
- Would be clearly stated in the travel contract
Floating Requirements
- Travelers are part of the float pool
- May float to other units, including ICU or Stepdown
- Will only be assigned patients that match their skillset
Dress Code
- Scrubs: Royal Blue
- Jackets: Optional, but must be scrub jackets (no hoodies or sweatshirts allowed)
Orientation
- Day 1: Computer training
- Day 2: Floor orientation with a preceptor
- Day 3 onward: Independent assignment
Additional Notes
- Fast-paced unit with 8–12 discharges and admissions daily
- RN’s are expected to complete their own admissions and discharges
- Support is readily available – team members are encouraged to ask for help
- The unit is new grad-friendly and emphasizes teaching and mentorship
