Job Summary
The Registered Nurse (RN) – Clinical Nurse, Pre-Admission Testing & Teaching (PATT) is a proactive and compassionate member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team. This RN ensures that patients, families, and caregivers receive individualized, high-quality, and safe care in preparation for surgical or procedural admissions. The nurse integrates clinical expertise, patient education, and evidence-based practice to optimize preoperative readiness and promote positive patient outcomes.
The role is guided by professional nursing standards, ethical principles, and shared governance, emphasizing excellence, integrity, and respect for every patient’s voice.
Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions
Exemplary Practice and Outcomes
- Perform comprehensive nursing assessments and implement individualized pre-admission care plans based on patient health history, surgical risk factors, and diagnostic testing.
- Utilize the full nursing process — assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation — to ensure patient readiness for surgery or procedure.
- Provide relationship-based, patient-centered care that respects diversity, cultural needs, and patient preferences.
- Deliver pre-admission education, including procedural preparation, medication management, and post-operative expectations.
- Collaborate with physicians, anesthesiologists, and interdisciplinary care teams to coordinate safe and efficient patient flow.
Teamwork and Collaboration
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare teams to promote coordinated care and continuity across the pre-operative pathway.
- Support a respectful, inclusive environment through effective teamwork and shared decision-making.
- Participate in performance improvement initiatives, research utilization, and shared governance to enhance care quality and patient satisfaction.
Professional Development and Leadership
- Maintain ongoing professional competence through mandatory education, certifications, and self-development.
- Serve as a preceptor or mentor to new nurses and students to promote a culture of learning and nursing excellence.
- Demonstrate accountability and initiative in supporting system goals and clinical excellence standards.
Evidence-Based Practice and Quality
- Apply evidence-based standards and best practices in pre-admission testing and patient education.
- Participate in data collection and quality improvement projects aimed at reducing cancellations, delays, or post-operative complications.
- Comply with all regulatory, safety, and accreditation standards, including infection control and patient safety initiatives.
Resource Management and Support
- Optimize use of human and material resources to support efficient and effective pre-admission services.
- Engage in process improvements to enhance workflow, patient throughput, and satisfaction.
- Support safe handoffs to perioperative teams and ensure continuity of care throughout the surgical journey.
Qualifications
Education:
- Graduate of an accredited/approved school of nursing (Diploma, ADN, or BSN).
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
Licensure/Certifications:
- Current, active RN license in the State of Georgia (or Compact License, as applicable).
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required (Instructor certification preferred).
Experience:
- Experience in direct patient care required; pre-admission, perioperative, or ambulatory surgery experience preferred.
Skills:
- Strong critical thinking, assessment, and clinical decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication and teaching abilities.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced clinical environment.
- Demonstrated proficiency in technology and electronic health records (EHR).
