Job Summary – Medical Technologist / Medical Laboratory Scientist


Shift: Primarily Day Shift; weekend rotation; 5×8-hour shifts per week
Guaranteed Hours: 40
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Urgency: Normal

Position Overview:
The Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist performs accurate and timely laboratory testing across all clinical departments to support diagnosis and treatment. This role requires strong attention to detail, adherence to established procedures, and effective communication with hospital staff.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience: No previous experience required
  • Certifications:
    • MT (ASCP, AMT, NCCLS or equivalent) or
    • MLS (ASCP, AMT, NCCLS or equivalent)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform analyses on blood and body fluids using manual and automated methods.
  • Prepare and process specimens, ensuring proper identification and accurate data entry.
  • Ensure quality control is met before releasing any results; repeat tests as needed.
  • Review results for accuracy, completeness, and consistency with prior findings.
  • Troubleshoot instrument and procedural issues; maintain equipment in optimal condition.
  • Participate in proficiency testing, QA activities, and staff training when required.
  • Maintain compliance with safety, infection control, and hospital policies.
  • Manage reagent/supply inventory and assist with evaluating new procedures or equipment.
  • Perform phlebotomy/specimen collection while verifying patient identity (max 1 error per 12 months).
  • Communicate promptly with supervisors and patient care areas regarding delays or abnormalities.
