Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Scrub Tech First Assistant to support safe, efficient, and high-quality surgical care across a range of operative procedures. Working under the direct supervision of the surgeon, the First Assistant ensures a safe operating room environment, maintains proper functioning of equipment, and provides advanced intraoperative support that enhances patient safety and procedural flow.
The First Assistant assists by anticipating the needs of the surgical team, managing instruments and supplies, ensuring proper patient positioning, and applying advanced knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and surgical technique. Responsibilities include providing visualization of the surgical site, assisting with hemostasis, aiding in closure of body planes, and supporting overall procedural progression.
The assistant must only perform duties while the surgeon is physically present within the OR suite footprint (OR/ASU/PACU). Independent direction of other personnel or functioning as a circulating nurse is not permitted.
Key Responsibilities
- Function in the role of both Surgical Technologist and First Assistant.
- Ensure OR environment safety and proper equipment performance.
- Anticipate surgeon needs and maintain sterile technique throughout procedures.
- Provide safe patient positioning and assist with exposure, hemostasis, and wound closure.
- Demonstrate strong understanding of surgical anatomy, pathology, and procedural steps.
- Respond appropriately to intraoperative emergencies.
- Maintain excellent organizational skills and a professional, team-oriented attitude.
- Adhere to all safety, regulatory, and procedural guidelines.
- Participate in required orientation and maintain compliance with facility standards.
Requirements
- Trade or Technical School certificate/diploma required.
- CSFA certification required.
- BLS certification (required within three months).
- Minimum 3 years of experience as a Surgical Technologist/First Assistant.
- Strong knowledge of sterile technique, instrumentation, and advanced surgical assisting skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in high-acuity, fast-paced surgical environments.
