Job Summary
The NICU RN Clinical Nurse is a proactive member of an interdisciplinary team caring for critically ill, premature, or medically fragile newborns. This role delivers individualized, high-quality neonatal care supported by the Professional Practice Model and Shared Governance.
The RN upholds the Georgia Professional Nurse Practice Act, ANA Scope and Standards, and consistently advocates for the patient and family while contributing to service excellence.
Core Responsibilities & Essential Functions
1. Exemplary Practice and Outcomes
- Performs the full Nursing Process—assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation—for neonatal patients.
- Provides relationship-based, culturally sensitive care tailored to the needs of premature and critically ill newborns.
- Communicates with families through bedside shift reports, updates, and education.
- Follows current evidence-based NICU standards and best practices.
2. Teamwork and Collaboration
- Coordinates neonatal care using interdisciplinary communication such as rounds, case reviews, and care planning.
- Supports teamwork, fosters respectful relationships, and contributes to recruitment and retention efforts.
- Participates in performance improvement projects and shared governance activities.
3. Professional Development & Initiative
- Completes required competencies, neonatal specialty education, and annual training.
- Serves as a mentor or preceptor to students or new staff.
- Engages in continuous professional growth and promotes a healthy work culture.
4. Evidence-Based Practice & Research
- Promotes and applies evidence-based practice and participates in research or quality improvement initiatives.
- Complies with all organizational policies, accreditation standards, and patient safety requirements, including TJC goals.
- Engages in data collection and evidence utilization to improve NICU care outcomes.
5. Resources & Support
- Anticipates and prioritizes neonatal care needs across the care continuum.
- Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to support improved clinical outcomes, reduced complications, and family-centered care.
- Uses resources effectively and contributes to process improvement.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Minimum Education
- Associate Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma required
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
Required Licensure & Certifications
(All required at hire unless otherwise noted)
- RN License – Single State or Multi-State Compact
- BLS – Basic Life Support
- NRP – Neonatal Resuscitation Program (or obtain within 180 days)
Required Minimum Experience
- Completion of an accredited nursing program with required clinical hours
- Direct patient care experience preferred; NICU experience strongly valued
Required Skills
- Strong neonatal assessment and critical thinking skills
- Ability to function effectively in a high-acuity NICU environment
- Excellent communication, teamwork, and family support skills
- Ability to respond calmly to emergencies
- Strong time management and computer skills
