Job Summary
The Operating Room RN Clinical Nurse is a proactive member of the surgical care team, working collaboratively with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and surgical technologists to ensure safe, high-quality perioperative care. This nurse upholds the Professional Practice Model, Shared Governance, and evidence-based surgical standards.
The RN adheres to the Georgia Professional Nurse Practice Act and ANA Scope & Standards, advocating for patients while supporting safety, quality, and service excellence goals.
Core Responsibilities & Essential Functions
1. Exemplary Practice and Outcomes
- Performs the full Nursing Process—assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation—within the perioperative setting.
- Delivers safe, individualized care for surgical patients, ensuring adherence to AORN and evidence-based OR standards.
- Conducts pre-op preparation, intraoperative support, and post-op handoff to PACU teams.
- Provides relationship-based care, maintaining communication with the patient and surgical team.
- Ensures accurate surgical counts, sterile field maintenance, and adherence to safety protocols.
2. Teamwork and Collaboration
- Coordinates safe and efficient OR care using interdisciplinary communication such as surgical timeouts, briefings, and debriefings.
- Demonstrates teamwork and contributes to a respectful, collaborative work environment.
- Participates in performance improvement, quality initiatives, and shared governance.
- Completes timely and accurate documentation in accordance with OR standards.
3. Professional Development and Initiative
- Completes all required competencies, continuing education, and surgical specialty training.
- Serves as a mentor or preceptor for new OR nurses or students.
- Engages in professional development and helps maintain a high-performing OR team.
4. Evidence-Based Practice and Research
- Applies evidence-based surgical practices and participates in research or quality-improvement initiatives.
- Upholds all organizational, legal, regulatory, and accreditation standards, including TJC safety goals.
- Utilizes best practices in infection control, sterile technique, and equipment handling.
5. Resources & Support
- Anticipates patient and surgical team needs throughout the perioperative process.
- Promotes efficient use of resources, including OR time, instruments, and supplies.
- Supports the development and improvement of workflows and protocols.
- Performs other duties as assigned and adheres to policies and code of conduct.
Required Minimum Education
- Associate Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma required
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
Required Licensure & Certifications
(All required at hire unless otherwise noted)
- Registered Nurse (RN) – Single State or Multi-State Compact
- Basic Life Support (BLS – AHA or ARC)
Required Minimum Experience
- Minimum 1 year RN Operating Room experience required
Required Skills
- Strong OR clinical and technical skills
- Ability to function in a fast-paced surgical environment
- Excellent communication, teamwork, and critical thinking
- Strong knowledge of sterile technique and surgical safety
- Ability to respond to emergencies in a calm, decisive manner
- Good time management and documentation skills
