Job Summary
The Emergency Department RN Clinical Nurse is a key member of an interdisciplinary team caring for patients experiencing urgent, emergent, or life-threatening conditions. This nurse delivers high-quality, safe, and timely emergency care guided by the Professional Practice Model, Shared Governance, and evidence-based standards.
The RN upholds the Georgia Professional Nurse Practice Act and ANA Scope & Standards while advocating for patients and supporting organizational service excellence goals.
Core Responsibilities & Essential Functions
1. Exemplary Practice and Outcomes
- Performs the full Nursing Process—assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation—for emergency patients with varying levels of acuity.
- Provides relationship-based, culturally sensitive care tailored to patient conditions including trauma, medical emergencies, behavioral health, pediatrics, and fast-track needs.
- Maintains open communication with patients and families during stabilization, treatment, and transfer.
- Practices using current emergency and trauma standards, including rapid assessment and early intervention.
2. Teamwork and Collaboration
- Coordinates emergency care through interdisciplinary communication, including bedside reports, trauma team activation, and case reviews.
- Demonstrates teamwork and supports a collaborative work environment across EMS, physicians, and ancillary departments.
- Participates in performance improvement activities, quality metrics, and shared governance.
- Ensures timely and accurate documentation in the electronic health record.
3. Professional Development & Initiative
- Completes all required competencies and certifications including ACLS, PALS, and trauma-related training.
- Serves as a mentor or preceptor for new ED nurses or students.
- Demonstrates initiative in maintaining professional development and supporting a strong emergency care team.
4. Evidence-Based Practice & Research
- Promotes evidence-based emergency nursing practices and participates in quality and research initiatives.
- Follows all organizational policies, regulatory standards, and patient safety goals (e.g., TJC).
- Participates in data collection and uses available evidence to drive clinical decisions and care improvements.
5. Resources & Support
- Anticipates patient needs across the continuum from triage to discharge or admission.
- Collaborates with emergency physicians, trauma teams, and care managers to support optimal outcomes.
- Uses resources appropriately and assists with improving ED workflows, protocols, and throughput.
- Performs other duties as assigned and adheres to system policies and code of conduct.
Required Minimum Education
- Associate Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma required
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
Required Licensure & Certifications
(All required at hire unless otherwise noted)
- Registered Nurse (RN) – Single State or Multi-State Compact
- Basic Life Support (BLS – AHA or ARC)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – or obtain within 90 days
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) – or obtain within 180 days
- Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) – or obtain within 18 months
Required Minimum Experience
- Minimum 1 years of RN experience required
- Emergency Department experience strongly preferred

- Strong emergency and trauma assessment skills
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, high-acuity ED
- Excellent critical thinking, communication, and rapid decision-making skills
- Ability to respond effectively to emergencies with calmness and composure
- Proficient in using technology and documentation systems
- Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills
