Job Summary

The L&D RN Clinical Nurse is an essential member of the interdisciplinary maternal-child health team, delivering safe, high-quality care to laboring patients, newborns, and families. This nurse practices within the Professional Practice Model, Shared Governance structure, and evidence-based clinical standards.

The RN upholds the Georgia Professional Nurse Practice Act and the ANA Scope & Standards, promoting patient advocacy, safety, and excellence in maternal care.

Core Responsibilities & Essential Functions

1. Exemplary Practice and Outcomes

  • Performs the full Nursing Process—assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, evaluation—for laboring patients and postpartum mothers.
  • Provides relationship-centered care tailored to gestational age, maternal conditions, fetal monitoring status, and cultural considerations.
  • Partners closely with patients, support persons, and families through bedside teaching, status updates, and shared decision-making.
  • Uses current L&D clinical standards including fetal monitoring, labor support techniques, induction/augmentation protocols, and emergency response algorithms.

2. Teamwork and Collaboration

  • Coordinates care across interdisciplinary teams including OB providers, anesthesia, NICU, and support services.
  • Ensures timely documentation and maintains clear communication during high-acuity situations such as labor progression, emergent deliveries, or postpartum complications.
  • Participates actively in performance improvement, case reviews, and shared governance.
  • Contributes to a respectful, inclusive, and collaborative unit culture.

3. Professional Development & Initiative

  • Completes all required competencies, mandatory education, and maternal-child specialty training.
  • Serves as a preceptor or mentor for staff and nursing students.
  • Demonstrates initiative in maintaining clinical competence and contributing to a supportive work environment.

4. Evidence-Based Practice & Research

  • Applies evidence-based practice guidelines for maternal-fetal care, postpartum recovery, and neonatal stabilization.
  • Adheres to all organizational policies, regulatory requirements, and patient safety standards including TJC goals.
  • Participates in data collection and utilizes evidence to improve L&D care and outcomes.

5. Resources & Support

  • Anticipates needs throughout the continuum—from triage to active labor, delivery, recovery, and stabilization.
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to reduce avoidable complications such as readmissions, delays, or adverse events.
  • Uses resources efficiently and participates in improving workflows, protocols, and care pathways.
  • Performs other duties as assigned and maintains compliance with policies and code of conduct.

Required Minimum Education

  • Associate Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma required
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred

Required Licensure & Certifications

(All required at hire unless otherwise noted)

  • Registered Nurse (RN) – Single State or Multi-State Compact
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

(Instructor/provisional versions accepted where applicable)

Required Minimum Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of direct patient care experience required
  • Labor & Delivery experience strongly preferred

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in fetal monitoring, labor assessment, and emergency maternal care
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and patient education skills
  • Ability to perform effectively in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment
  • Ability to respond to emergencies with calm, decisive, and professional action
  • Excellent time management, critical thinking, and computer/documentation skills
