Job Summary
The Acute Care Float RN is a vital member of the interdisciplinary care team who works across various inpatient units (medical, surgical, telemetry, and specialty areas) to meet patient needs and support staffing flexibility. This nurse delivers safe, individualized care using the Nursing Process and evidence-based practice while adapting quickly to different clinical environments.
The RN upholds the Georgia Professional Nurse Practice Act, ANA Scope & Standards, and organizational policies while supporting service excellence, collaboration, and high-quality outcomes.
Core Responsibilities & Essential Functions
1. Exemplary Practice and Outcomes
- Performs the full Nursing Process—assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, evaluation—across diverse patient populations and unit types.
- Provides relationship-based, patient-centered care tailored to age, diagnosis, and clinical complexity.
- Adapts care delivery to various specialties, supporting patients with medical, surgical, cardiac, and acute illness needs.
- Practices using current clinical standards while maintaining flexibility in fast-changing environments.
2. Teamwork and Collaboration
- Coordinates care with interdisciplinary teams across multiple units, ensuring seamless transitions and effective communication.
- Supports a respectful and inclusive work environment and promotes teamwork within each assigned department.
- Ensures accurate and timely documentation in all settings.
- Participates in performance improvement initiatives and shared governance.
3. Professional Development & Initiative
- Completes all specialty-specific competencies for float pool coverage areas.
- Serves as a mentor or resource to newer nurses when appropriate.
- Demonstrates initiative in learning diverse clinical skills and maintaining readiness for assignments in different units.
4. Evidence-Based Practice & Research
- Applies evidence-based practice in all clinical settings.
- Maintains compliance with organizational policies, regulatory requirements, and TJC patient safety goals.
- Engages in data collection and uses evidence to support clinical decisions and care improvements.
5. Resources & Support
- Anticipates patient needs across multiple care settings and adjusts prioritization based on unit acuity.
- Collaborates with care managers and interdisciplinary teams to improve patient outcomes, reduce complications, and enhance patient flow.
- Uses resources efficiently and supports improvements in workflows and protocols.
- Performs other duties as assigned and maintains compliance with all organizational policies.
Required Minimum Education
- Graduate of an accredited nursing school required
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
Required Licensure & Certifications
- Registered Nurse (RN) – Single State or Multi-State Compact
- Basic Life Support (BLS – AHA or ARC)
Required Skills
- Strong understanding of nursing theory, regulations, and clinical practices
- Proficiency in assessment, examination, and treatment techniques across multiple specialties
- Ability to maintain accurate medical records and follow clinical protocols
- Strong problem-solving skills and sound clinical judgment

- Excellent written and oral communication skills

- Basic understanding of cardiac anatomy, conditions, and treatment modalities
