Job Summary
The Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) is an advanced Registered Nurse responsible for providing clinical leadership at the microsystem level. This role improves patient outcomes by coordinating care, optimizing clinical processes, managing resources, and supporting team performance.
The CNL collaborates with interprofessional teams to enhance quality, safety, and continuity of care, ensuring that patients receive personalized, evidence-based, and high-quality services. This position operates within professional nursing standards, ethical guidelines, and recognized scope of practice expectations.
Core Responsibilities
Clinical Leadership
- Apply CNL competencies to guide clinical practice, workflow optimization, and patient-centered care.
- Serve as a resource for patients, caregivers, and nursing staff.
- Demonstrate strong communication, relationship-building, and team development skills.
- Address clinical issues proactively, promoting patient safety and quality outcomes.
- Support shared governance, LEAN principles, and regulatory compliance.
Care Environment Management
- Evaluate and improve care delivery processes within the clinical microsystem.
- Coordinate team rounding and streamline patient flow.
- Apply evidence-based practices to optimize outcomes.
- Utilize informatics and healthcare technology to analyze data and drive improvements.
- Ensure responsible use of clinical resources through proper delegation and oversight.
Professional Development
- Serve as a mentor and preceptor for new and experienced nurses.
- Promote a healthy work environment through accessibility and positive leadership.
- Complete all required competency assessments and specialty education.
- Advocate for professional nursing practice and foster ongoing staff development.
Clinical Outcomes Management
- Assess and mitigate risks for high-risk patients.
- Achieve mandated quality and safety outcomes aligned with regulatory standards.
- Support disease-specific management and performance improvement initiatives.
Required Qualifications
Education
- Master’s Degree in Nursing (MS, MSN, DNP) from an accredited program specializing in Clinical Nurse Leadership — Required.
Licensure & Certifications
- Active Registered Nurse license (Single State or Multi-state Compact).
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification — Required.
- Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) certification — Required upon hire.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) — Preferred.
Experience
- Minimum 2 years of acute care nursing experience in a similar patient population.
- Demonstrated experience in direct patient care, staff education, and unit-level problem solving.
Skills
- Strong leadership and mentoring skills.
- Excellent communication, conflict resolution, and listening skills.
- Ability to implement change and challenge existing processes constructively.
- Proficiency with healthcare technology and real-time clinical education tools.
- Skilled in delegation, oversight, and clinical evaluation.
