Job Summary
The Nurse Manager – PACU is a Registered Nurse leader responsible for providing strategic, clinical, and operational leadership for the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit within a general surgery setting. This role ensures high-quality patient recovery following surgical procedures, supports optimal staffing, and promotes safe, efficient, and patient-centered care.
The Nurse Manager oversees clinical performance, quality outcomes, resource utilization, staff engagement, and regulatory compliance while fostering a safe and collaborative environment. This leader supports organizational goals through evidence-based practice, professional development, and strong interdisciplinary communication.
Core Responsibilities
Resources & Support
- Lead and manage PACU operations, staff coordination, and clinical workflow.
- Serve as the unit’s chief retention and safety officer, promoting team stability and safe practices.
- Oversee staffing, scheduling, resource management, and onboarding.
- Apply LEAN and quality improvement practices to optimize operational performance.
- Manage budget, financial performance, and cost-effective resource utilization.
Interdisciplinary Teamwork & Collaboration
- Communicate effectively with PACU staff, anesthesia providers, surgeons, and support teams.
- Resolve conflict and foster a healthy, collaborative work environment.
- Build strong partnerships with interdisciplinary teams to support perioperative throughput.
- Promote professional relationships and team engagement.
Exemplary Practice & Outcomes
- Promote high standards of clinical competence in post-anesthesia recovery care.
- Support evidence-based practice, clinical protocols, and regulatory expectations.
- Ensure quality, safety, and compliance with all licensure, accreditation, and patient safety standards.
- Implement change management strategies to support evolving PACU needs.
Professional Development
- Develop and maintain operational budgets and performance goals.
- Support ongoing staff education, competency development, and performance coaching.
- Represent the unit and organization through leadership committees, initiatives, and community outreach.
- Mentor and support staff career advancement.
Evidence-Based Practice & Research
- Promote nursing research, data-driven decision-making, and process improvement initiatives.
- Use analytics and technology to guide operational and clinical decisions.
- Identify risk areas and ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
- Maintain confidentiality and ethical management of patient and staff data.
Required Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) — Required
- Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN) — Preferred
Licensure & Certifications
- Active RN License (Single-State or Multi-State Compact) — Required
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (AHA or ARC) — Required
Experience
- Minimum 2 years of progressive nursing management experience — Required
- PACU or perioperative leadership experience — Highly preferred
Skills
- Strong communication and interpersonal abilities
- Advanced leadership, relationship-building, and conflict-resolution skills
- Knowledge of healthcare operations, staffing models, and PACU/Perioperative workflows
- Proficiency with data analytics, technology systems, and quality improvement methodologies
- Ability to inspire, coach, and lead teams in a fast-paced recovery environment
- Strong understanding of risk management and regulatory compliance
