Description
Position Summary
The Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) provides high-quality respiratory care to patients of varying ages in an acute-care setting. The RRT is responsible for performing assessments, managing respiratory equipment and therapies, and collaborating with physicians and nursing staff to support optimal patient outcomes. This role requires clinical expertise, strong critical-thinking skills, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced hospital environment.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care & Assessments
- Perform comprehensive respiratory assessments and evaluate patient responses to therapy.
- Administer respiratory treatments including nebulizers, oxygen therapy, chest physiotherapy, CPAP/BiPAP, and mechanical ventilation support.
- Adjust ventilator settings and troubleshoot equipment in accordance with provider orders and established protocols.
- Participate in patient stabilization, including Code Blue, Rapid Response, trauma, and emergency airway support.
Therapeutic & Diagnostic Procedures
- Conduct diagnostic tests such as ABGs, pulse oximetry, bedside spirometry, and airway management assessments.
- Manage artificial airways, including endotracheal tubes and tracheostomies.
- Assist with intubations and extubations as needed.
Communication & Collaboration
- Work closely with physicians, nurses, and interdisciplinary team members to develop and implement respiratory care plans.
- Provide clear and timely documentation of assessments, interventions, and patient progress.
- Educate patients and families on treatments, equipment use, and respiratory health.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all infection control guidelines, regulatory standards, and hospital policies.
- Ensure safe operation of all respiratory equipment and promptly report malfunctions.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and maintain competencies for high-acuity patient care.
Qualifications
Required
- Active RRT credential through the NBRC.
- State Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license (state-specific; must be active by start date).
- BLS certification (AHA).
- Strong clinical experience in acute-care or critical-care respiratory therapy.
Preferred
- ACLS, PALS, and/or NRP certifications.
- Experience with ventilators, high-flow oxygen systems, CPAP/BiPAP, and emergency airway management.
- Prior hospital or travel RT experience.
- Experience with EMR systems such as EPIC, Cerner, or Meditech.
