Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) – Job Description
Summary
The Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) is a vital member of the surgical team responsible for preparing operating rooms, arranging equipment, and assisting surgeons during procedures. The CST ensures a safe, sterile environment and plays a key role in supporting efficient surgical operations.
Responsibilities
- Prepare operating rooms for surgery by setting up sterile instruments, supplies, and equipment.
- Ensure all surgical instruments and equipment are functioning properly before procedures.
- Maintain strict sterile techniques and infection-control protocols throughout the surgery.
- Assist surgeons by passing instruments, sponges, and supplies during procedures.
- Anticipate surgeon needs and maintain organized instrument tables.
- Handle surgical specimens appropriately and label them as per hospital protocols.
- Perform counts of sponges, needles, and instruments before, during, and after procedures to prevent retained surgical items.
- Assist with patient preparation, including positioning, prepping, and draping.
- Handle surgical equipment such as lights, suction machines, and video systems.
- Manage and restock surgical supplies and prepare for future procedures.
- Assist with cleaning and turnover of operating rooms between cases.
- Collaborate with surgeons, RNs, anesthesia providers, and other OR staff to ensure safe, timely operations.
- Adhere to all regulatory standards and facility policies.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program.
- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential from NBSTSA required or preferred (depending on employer).
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required.
- Prior experience in an operating room setting is preferred but not always required.
