Shift: 8/10/12-hour Day & Evening, start times vary
Call Required: Yes
Guaranteed Hours: 36 hrs/week
Contract Length: 91 days (13 weeks)

Unit Overview

• Phase I Beds: 6
• Phase II Beds: 10
• Proficiency required in both Phase I & II recovery
• Must be competent in postoperative recovery, including high-acuity Phase I patients
• Ratio: 1:1 (per ASPAN guidelines)

Clinical Skills / Competencies

• Must be able to read and interpret cardiac strips
• Must be able to troubleshoot vents (840s + travel vents); RT manages vents but RN must know basics
• Must be comfortable caring for:
  • ENT (includes some pediatrics but peds experience not required)
  • Urology
  • Extensive Ortho
  • General Surgery
  • GYN
  • Endoscopy
  • Eyes
  • Dental (includes peds)
• ICU patients are NOT recovered in PACU — transferred directly to ICU
• Preferred: ICU-qualified RNs (Phase I acuity)
• Typical length of stay per patient: 45–60 mins

Call & Weekend Requirements

Weekend Call Requirement

• Every 10th or 11th weekend
• Full weekend call:
  • Saturday: 19:00–07:00
  • Sunday: 19:00–06:00

Weekday Call

• Mon–Fri: 20:30–06:00
• Friday: 20:30–07:00

Holiday Requirements

• Rotate holidays with permanent staff
• Discuss details with manager

Shift Details

• 8, 10, and 12-hour shifts
• Start times may include: 06:00, 08:00, 09:00
• Includes Day and Evening shifts depending on schedule

Additional Notes

• Teamwork is essential — must work well with others
• Housing with pets is very difficult → MS/CC must initiate special housing search before placement
• If RN is offered 48 hrs, OT bill rate must match regular bill rate
• Must follow cancellation policy (below)

Cancellation Policy

Based on total contract length:

• 12 weeks or less: up to 1 shift (8/9/10/12 hrs)
• 13–18 weeks: up to 2 shifts (16/18/20/24 hrs)
• 19+ weeks: up to 3 shifts (24/27/30/36 hrs)
