7p-7a, every other weekend, Floating to like units between our local hospitals- Meridian Medical Center and Nampa Medical Center is required. Travelers are first to float. Med/surg floats to med/surg units when needed. Not super common.
MedSurg – Floor 6 | RN Unit Overview
Department: MedSurg
Unit: Floor 6
Number of Beds: 35
Nurse:Patient Ratio: 1:4–5, adjusted by real-time acuity tool
Patient Population & Common Diagnoses
This is a multi-specialty surgical/medical unit. Common patient types include:
- Bariatric Surgery (Center of Excellence; high volume)
- Urology: TURP, cystoscopy, prostatectomy, CBI management
- Colorectal Surgery
- Vascular Surgery: AAA repair, endarterectomy, fem-pop bypass
- Acute Care Surgery
- Gynecological Surgery: primarily hysterectomies
- Plastics/Breast Reconstruction: mastectomies
- Additional Specialty Surgeries: Whipple procedures, pectus surgery
- Cystic Fibrosis patients
- General Medical Patients: No dedicated medical unit—shared on this floor
Required Skills & Experience
- Minimum 2 years of MedSurg experience (more preferred)
- Proficient in:
- Central line care
- NG tube management
- Ostomy care
- Surgical drain management
- Professional communication
- Preferred experience:
- Continuous Bladder Irrigations (CBIs)
- Foley catheter management
- Required Certification: BLS
- No drip titration required
- Common drips: Heparin (set rate as ordered)
Staffing & Support
- Charge Nurse on each shift: No patient assignment
- Strong leadership presence:
- Assistant Nurse Managers
- Manager
- Day/Night coverage
- Weekend on-call leadership
- Travelers may act as charge if experienced
- CNAs available at 1:8–10 ratio
- Remote telemetry monitoring provided; RNs must read their own strips
- Respiratory equipment: CPAP and high-flow oxygen; occasional BiPAP
- BiPAP-dependent patients are transferred to higher level of care
Scheduling
- 12-hour shifts: 7–7
- Scheduler ensures grouped shifts (e.g., 3 consecutive nights when possible)
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (may increase based on need)
- Holiday requirement: As needed
- No call or standby requirement
Floating Expectations
- Required to float to similar MedSurg units at:
- Meridian Medical Center
- Nampa Medical Center
- Travelers float first
- Floating is not frequent but possible
Orientation & Dress Code
- 1 shift of unit-specific orientation (after hospital orientation)
- 1 didactic day with educator for unit processes and specifics
- No specific scrub color required—clean, professional attire acceptable
- Radius rule: Must live 50+ miles from the facility
