Description
Shift Information:
36 hours, Day (12 hour shifts), 7:00AM-7:30PM, Rotating weekend and holiday
Minimum Licenses & Certifications
- at the time of submission Licensed as a Respiratory Therapist in the State of Massachusetts.
- ACLS certification required within 1 months of hire
- NRP certification required or obtained within 1 months of hire.
- PALS certification required or obtained within 1 months of hire.
Registered Respiratory Therapist – Job Description
Job Requirements
Minimum Education
- Graduate of a CoARC-approved Respiratory Therapy program.
- Credentialed as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care (or eligibility to obtain credential).
Minimum Work Experience
- Prior clinical respiratory therapy experience required.
Minimum Skills
- Basic computer skills required.

Physical Requirements
- Ability to exert 20–50 lbs of force occasionally, 10–25 lbs frequently, and up to 10 lbs constantly to move objects.
- Frequent reaching and handling with hands/arms.
- Occasional stooping and crouching.
Essential Functions
Patient Assessment & Care Planning
- Systematically gathers and evaluates patient information from interviews and clinical data sources.
- Develops individualized care plans based on assessment findings.
- Identifies and acts on deviations from expected clinical findings.
- Coordinates care with other healthcare providers and delegates appropriately.
- Assesses and reassesses patient condition, prioritizing and modifying care plans as needed.
- Documents care implementation, including adverse or unexpected events.
Patient Education
- Assesses patient learning needs, readiness to learn, and potential barriers.
- Determines when to involve family/significant others in education.
- Provides and evaluates patient teaching regarding condition, treatment, prognosis, and follow-up instructions.
- Prepares patients to assume appropriate self-care responsibilities.
Clinical Procedures
- Measures and administers correct medication dosages per physician orders.
- Administers respiratory therapy treatments and oxygen therapy; understands indications and side effects.
- Obtains arterial blood gases (ABGs) per hospital policy.
- Performs pulse oximetry, ensuring accuracy of results.
- Conducts pulmonary function testing according to ATS standards.
- Performs EKG procedures and ensures quality recordings.
- Assists with flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy.
Ventilator & Equipment Management
- Sets up and manages mechanical ventilators, including BiPAP and CPAP units, selecting appropriate patient parameters.
- Assesses ventilator and BiPAP/CPAP functioning to ensure safe operation.
- Evaluates cardiopulmonary status and recommends adjustments to the plan of care.
- Provides instruction on proper use of cardiopulmonary medications and equipment.
- Distributes age- and culturally-appropriate educational materials.
Quality & Safety Responsibilities
- Consistently implements components of the Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP) bundle per protocol.
- Alerts the Nurse Manager/Director/Nursing Supervisor to any deviations from the VAP bundle for review and follow-up.
