Short Description

The Registered Nurse (RN) ensures the delivery of high-quality patient care by following the nursing care plan and supervising Licensed Practical Nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants, and orientees.

Job-Specific Duties & Competencies

Patient Assessment & Care

  • Complete a full nursing assessment within 8 hours of admission
  • Develop individualized plans of care
  • Identify patient/family teaching needs
  • Provide timely updates for team conferences
  • Ensure accurate and timely documentation
  • Use the nursing process (assess, plan, implement, evaluate)
  • Provide patient/family education toward established goals
  • Initiate discharge planning starting day 1

Communication & Collaboration

  • Report any change in patient status to provider and Charge Nurse
  • Support continuity of care between shifts/providers
  • Seek guidance for complex clinical decisions

Leadership & Delegation

  • Provide direction and supervision to ancillary personnel
  • Delegate appropriately
  • Offer calm support to staff, patients, and families
  • Assist with unit team-building
  • Assume Charge Nurse duties when assigned

Operational Responsibilities

  • Ensure safe environment of care
  • Notify leadership of supply/equipment needs
  • Maintain cost-effective care practices
  • Monitor inventory and charges

Professional Development

  • Pursue ongoing professional growth through self-study and continuing education
  • Manage time effectively and prioritize unit/patient needs

Additional Duties

  • Perform other responsibilities as requested
