L&D / Postpartum / Mother-Baby (LDRP) – Job Description Oregon License Required ✔ OR 90-Day Emergency License accepted (traveler may apply prior to start) Unit Information Unit: L&D / PP / MB (LDRP model) L&D Beds: 5 OR Suites: 1 (staffed by Main OR—L&D RNs do not scrub or circulate) Triage Beds: 1 Postpartum Beds: 3 (in addition to the 5 LDRPs) Annual Births: ~340 deliveries/year (30–35 per month on average) Acuity: Not a high-risk unit Staffing & Ratios Ratios follow AWHONN guidelines Always minimum 2 RNs on the unit; sometimes 3 Each RN must function independently in all areas and serve as backup to the other RN(s) Required Certifications BLS NRP Patient Types / Common Diagnoses Routine labor and delivery Postpartum care Routine nursery Intermediate nursery (stabilize and arrange transfer if needed) Required Skills & Experience Strong and independent L&D and postpartum skillset Must be fully competent in: Labor & Delivery Postpartum Routine Nursery Intermediate Nursery Must be able to function independently in all areas of care Strong critical thinking and ability to shift rapidly between tasks/patient needs Drips RNs are required to titrate drips Common drips: Pitocin (induction/augmentation) Insulin Magnesium Sulfate Leadership / Support Charge Nurse: On unit House Supervisor: In house CNA II / Unit Secretary: Yes OB/Neonatologist: On call 24/7 (OB generally in-house during labor) Equipment / Monitoring Ventilator (stabilization only; transfers arranged) Bubble CPAP Central fetal monitoring (FE Centricity Perinatal) Maternal telemetry read by ICU staff Scheduling 12-hour shifts: 7a–7p or 7p–7a Block scheduling allowed; shift trades permitted Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend Holiday Requirement: 1 major + 1 minor (if applicable) Call/Standby: To be discussed Floating: Expected; usually as “helping hands” to other units Dress Code Scrubs provided by facility Orientation Unit-specific orientation typically includes 3 shifts Additional Notes Unit can vary greatly in pace—may start with no labors and finish with multiple active labors, postpartum patients, and intermediate nursery cases.
