Job Overview

Seeking an experienced oncology/med-surg registered nurse for an acute care inpatient setting. The RN will care for a diverse population of oncology and medical patients, requiring strong clinical assessment skills, solid time management, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment.

Unit Details

• Unit: Oncology – inpatient only
• Beds: 29
• Ratios: 1:5 (occasionally 1:6)
• Support Staff: Typically 3 nurse aides per day
• EMR: MEDITECH 6.1
• Telemetry: Yes (no strip-reading required)
• Floating: Rare, only to medical acute
• Weekends: Every other weekend
• Holidays: Rotating
• No blocked scheduling
• 75-mile radius rule from RN’s driver’s license address

• Acute oncology symptoms
• Thrombocytopenia
• Neutropenia
• Sickle cell crisis
• Hematology conditions
• Medical overflow
• End-of-life care
• Outpatient oncology patients needing extended treatment

Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide direct nursing care for oncology and med-surg patients in an acute setting.
• Administer medications, including chemotherapy if ONS-certified.
• Manage central lines, port access, transfusions, and oncology-specific interventions.
• Maintain accurate, timely documentation in MEDITECH.
• Educate patients and families regarding disease processes, treatments, and discharge planning.
• Support end-of-life care, comfort measures, and palliative care as needed.
• Adhere to infection control standards, including neutropenic precautions.

Skills

• Strong oncology/hematology and med-surg clinical competence
• Ability to manage neutropenic and thrombocytopenic patients
• Experience with central lines, blood product administration, and symptom management
• Proficiency in IV therapy, port care, and infusion management
• Ability to recognize early signs of clinical deterioration
• Familiarity with end-of-life and palliative care principles
• Proficient in MEDITECH 6.1 documentation
• Telemetry experience (monitoring; no requirement to interpret strips)

• Ability to use infusion pumps, PCA pumps, and other bedside equipment

   

Requirements

• Experience: Minimum 2 years in oncology or med-surg
• License: Active RN license
• Certifications:
  • BLS (AHA) – required
  • NIHSS – preferred
  • ONS – preferred if administering chemotherapy
