Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT)
Schedule: Full-time | Rotating or Assigned Shift
Setting: Hospital / Clinical Laboratory
Pay: Competitive, based on experience
Certifications: MLT (ASCP/AMT) or eligible

Job Description

The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) performs routine clinical laboratory testing to support accurate and timely diagnosis across the health system. Working under the supervision of a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Laboratory Supervisor, this role handles specimen processing, instrument operation, standardized testing, and result documentation in accordance with regulatory and quality standards.

Responsibilities

Laboratory Testing & Analysis
• Perform routine testing in chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, coagulation, and immunoassay
• Prepare, run, and analyze patient specimens following established protocols
• Identify abnormal or critical results and notify the appropriate personnel

Quality Assurance & Compliance
• Run and document quality control testing
• Participate in proficiency testing and corrective actions
• Maintain compliance with CLIA, CAP, Joint Commission, and internal policies

Instrumentation & Technology
• Operate, clean, and troubleshoot analyzers and lab equipment
• Assist with calibration, reagent prep, and instrument performance monitoring
• Escalate equipment issues promptly

Specimen Collection & Handling
• Collect, label, and process specimens (including phlebotomy, if assigned)
• Ensure proper transport, storage, and tracking of all samples
• Prioritize workflow to meet turnaround times

Documentation & Reporting
• Accurately enter results and patient data into the LIS
• Maintain logs, QC documentation, and instrument records
• Communicate with clinical teams regarding specimen or testing issues

Collaboration & Support
• Support MLS staff, supervisors, and clinical teams
• Participate in continuing education and competency assessments
• Contribute to a safe, clean, and compliant lab environment

Qualifications

Required
• Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or related field
• MLT certification (ASCP, AMT) or certification-eligible within 12 months
• Understanding of laboratory procedures, QC, and instrumentation
• Strong accuracy, focus, and adherence to protocols

Preferred
• 1–2 years of clinical or hospital laboratory experience
• Experience with analyzers (Beckman, Roche, Abbott, Sysmex, Siemens)
• Familiarity with LIS platforms (Beaker, SoftLab, Sunquest, Meditech, etc.)
