Travel RN Corrections
Location: Huttonsville, WV
Duration: 13 weeks
Shift: Days (Every other weekend/Rotating Holidays)
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct thorough assessments, develop individualized treatment plans, and deliver a broad spectrum of nursing services including medication administration, health screenings, and patient education.
- Lead and supervise licensed practical nurses (LPNs), certified nursing assistants (CNAs), and other nursing paraprofessionals in delivering safe and effective patient care.
- Coordinate diagnostic tests, treatments, and specialist consultations under the direction of the Medical Director, Physicians, Physician Assistants, or Nurse Practitioners.
- Perform medical rounds within housing units, passing medications, conducting screenings, and responding promptly to medical needs.
- Assist with minor medical and surgical procedures, ensuring adherence to aseptic techniques and safety protocols.
- Evaluate emergency situations, prioritizing care and facilitating timely referrals to appropriate medical providers, including conducting daily sick call assessments.
- Manage wound care by checking and changing dressings as prescribed.
- Maintain and apply pharmacological knowledge to safely administer medications, including IV therapy, intramuscular (IM) injections, and other approved routes.
- Monitor for adverse drug reactions and overdose, ensuring prompt intervention when necessary.
- Apply knowledge of therapeutic diets and nutrition plans, implementing dietary orders accurately.
- Provide psychosocial support by understanding social and behavioral sciences relevant to the correctional environment.
- Demonstrate proficiency in CPR, provide instructions, and confidently respond to life-threatening emergencies.
- Document all nursing interventions and patient interactions accurately within the Problem-Oriented Medical Record (POMR) system.
- Contribute to continuous improvement by recommending enhancements to procedures, equipment, and supplies.
- Complete detailed incident reports for medical or security issues, and notify supervisors accordingly.
- Participate in ongoing in-service training, skills development, and team meetings to stay current with best practices.
- Respond effectively to medical emergencies involving inmates, staff, or visitors, providing appropriate first aid or triage.
- Perform comprehensive physical, psychological, and psychosocial assessments, both within the Health Care Unit and in housing areas as needed.
- Gather detailed health histories, conducting assessments that inform diagnosis and treatment.
- Provide timely written reports on patient status during admission, throughout confinement, and at discharge.
- Make informed triage decisions, communicating patient needs clearly to other healthcare team members.
- Implement individualized treatment programs utilizing protocols established by the Medical Director, and refer patients to specialists when necessary.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including nursing staff, physicians, correctional officers, and mental health providers to ensure holistic patient care.
- Apply infection control standards and aseptic techniques meticulously during all procedures.
- Obtain specimens (e.g., body fluids) and perform diagnostic tests such as EKGs following proper protocols.
- Maintain accurate, current documentation of nursing encounters and care plans.
- Build professional relationships with patients, visitors, and staff to foster a respectful and collaborative environment.
- Identify personal learning needs and pursue ongoing education to enhance clinical skills.
- Uphold all nursing policies, procedures, and ethical standards, aligning with the State Nurse Practice Act and facility regulations.
- Participate in quality assurance activities, including chart audits, to promote high standards of care.
- Promote teamwork and effective communication among staff to enhance safety and patient outcomes.
- Supervise and mentor junior staff, encouraging excellence and continuous improvement.
- Demonstrate accountability and a professional appearance, representing the organization positively.
- Adhere to all facility and organizational policies, including dress code, scheduling, safety, and confidentiality.
- Maintain the confidentiality of inmate records and sensitive information at all times.
- Approach organizational change positively, offering suggestions for improving work conditions.
- Assist in orienting new employees and support a cooperative team environment.
- Perform additional duties as assigned, extending flexibility within the scope of practice.
Qualifications:
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the state of practice.
