Unit: MedSurg – Floor 2

Unit Overview
- Number of Beds: 19
- Includes 2 overflow critical care rooms
- If patient condition deteriorates, unit may initiate norepinephrine or levophed with administrative supervisor support prior to transfer
- Patient Population: Pediatric and Adult MedSurg (Ages 0–100+)
Nurse Staffing
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio:
- Acuity-based staffing
- Average census: 9 patients
- Maximum ratio: 1:5 for MedSurg
- Typically 4 RNs per shift (Monday–Friday)
- Charge Nurse:
- One of three RNs serves as charge
- Typically no patient assignment
- May take 2–3 patients if needed
- CNAs/PCTs:
- Days: 1–2 CNAs
- Nights: 1 CNA
- Virtual care team supports admissions, discharges, and Tele-ICU
Required Certifications
- BLS
- ACLS
- PALS
Common Diagnoses / Patient Types
- Post-operative orthopedic patients
- Ski-related trauma and fractures
- Total joint replacements (hips, knees, shoulders)
- GYN surgical patients (e.g., hysterectomies)
- COVID patients
- Small bowel obstruction (SBO)
- Patients requiring:
- Vapotherm
- High-flow oxygen
- Chest tubes
- Surgical drains
- Wound care
- Telemetry monitoring
Required Experience / Skills
- Minimum 2 years RN experience
- Strong MedSurg and Pediatric MedSurg background required
- Orthopedic and post-operative experience preferred
- Ability to mix certain medications
- Strong overall clinical skill set
Drips & Medications
- RN Titration Required: Yes
- Common Drips:
- Heparin
- Cardizem (set rate)
- Amiodarone (set rate)
- Initiation of pressors for critical patients prior to transfer
Respiratory & Monitoring
- RT Equipment Available:
- Ventilator (for stabilization and transfer)
- Vapotherm
- CPAP / BiPAP
- Telemetry:
- RNs are responsible for reading and interpreting telemetry
- Monitor techs assist only
- Rhythm recognition, strip measurement, and documentation are RN responsibilities
- Tele monitors located at RN station
Scheduling & Requirements
- Shifts: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM
- Scheduling: Self-scheduling with core staff
- Weekend Requirement: Equitably distributed
- Holiday Requirement: Equitably distributed
- Call/Standby: Twice per contract
- Floating:
- Helping hands or safety attendant duties only
- No picking up shifts in other departments
- Must be comfortable with safe tasking as needed
Orientation & Dress Code
- Orientation: 2 unit-specific shifts
- Scrubs: Any color allowed
Additional Facility Requirement
- Radius Rule: Travelers must live 50 miles or more from the facility

Numerous bars and eateries fill Ketchum’s Main Street, including venues for enjoying traditional regional dishes like bison and elk. Annual Wagon Days in early September brings the largest non-motorized parade in the Pacific Northwest to Main Street. It comes complete with marching bands, Basque dancers, western cowboys, wheels and wagons, concluding with a Street Party on Town Square.
