Description
Pride Health is hiring a Pathologist’s Assistant to support our client’s facility in Detroit, MI 48202. This is a 13-week contract opportunity, offering a competitive pay rate and the chance to work in a high-volume surgical pathology environment within a leading healthcare system.
Job Summary
The Pathologist’s Assistant provides advanced anatomic pathology services under the direction and supervision of a qualified Pathologist. This role involves gross examination of surgical specimens, assistance with post-mortem examinations, quality assurance activities, and collaboration with pathology residents and laboratory teams to ensure accurate and timely diagnostic outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform gross description, dissection, and sampling of surgical specimens for microscopic examination, including frozen and permanent sections.
- Accession specimens and ensure proper identification in accordance with surgical pathology policies.
- Prepare specimen containers and tissue cassettes accurately and efficiently.
- Assist with resident training and competency assessment following departmental guidelines.
- Perform gross photography of specimens and maintain related documentation.
- Support tumor procurement activities for biorepository use, including documentation and quality indicators.
- Participate in departmental quality assurance and quality control initiatives.
- Maintain and monitor instruments, equipment, and refrigeration units in assigned work areas.
- Manage inventory of frozen section and surgical pathology laboratory supplies.
- Select and dispose of gross tissues and extremities after report finalization.
- Perform autopsies, including external examination, organ inspection, evisceration, dissection, tissue submission, and dictation.
- Assist with additional duties as assigned to support departmental operations.
Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor of Science degree from a regionally accredited college or university – Required
Certifications:
- Completion of a NAACLS-accredited Pathologist’s Assistant program OR
- PA (ASCP) Certification – Required
Experience:
- Minimum 5 years of experience as a Pathologist’s Assistant in surgical pathology – Required
Skills & Attributes:
- Strong knowledge of anatomic pathology and surgical specimen handling
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
- Effective communication and teamwork abilities
- Self-directed, adaptable, and committed to continuous learning
- Willingness to instruct and support training of others
