Description
Department Overview
- Department: Interventional Radiology (IR)
- Role: Registered Nurse (RN)
- Certifications Required:
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) → Travelers must have this, even though pediatric experience isn’t required
⚙️ Unit Setup
- Facilities:
- 1 dedicated IR room
- Cath Lab (8th floor) used for vascular procedures
- Nurses may float between IR and Cath Lab in the same day
- Staffing: 7 RNs total
- Case Volume:
- IR: 5–8 procedures per day
- CT prep/IV starts: ~50 patients per day
🩺 Common Procedures & Diagnoses
- Biopsies: Breast, thyroid (US-guided), CT/MRI-guided
- Complex Vascular:
- Embolization (bleeds, fibroids, tumors)
- Thrombectomies (pulmonary embolism, DVT) using INARI/EKOS systems
- Drainage: Abscesses, pleural effusions, joint collections, abdominal fluid (paracentesis)
- Pain Management: Injections (spine, shoulder, hip, knee)
- Lines & Access: Permcaths, PICCs, ports, tunneled catheters, chemo infusion ports, fistula checks
- Monitoring: Pacemaker patients, sedation cases (peds & adults)
📋 Job Duties
- Patient assessment & charting (Radiology Flowsheet)
- Managing patients in all 3 phases: pre-, intra-, and post-procedure
- Communicating with physicians/mid-level providers about care plans
- IV insertions & CT preps for scheduled patients
👩⚕️ Experience Requirements
- Minimum: 1 year in IR
- Must be proficient in IV starts
- First-time travelers welcome
- Critical care exposure is a bonus
🖥️ Systems & Team
- EMR: Allscripts
- Interventionalists: IR Chair + another MD in-house during the day, on-call after 5 pm
- Charge Nurse: Runs the schedule, coordinates, and steps in to help if needed
- IR Techs: CST paired with physician; IR techs come from Radiology
⏰ Shifts & Scheduling
- Shift Times:
- 7:00 am – 7:30 pm
- 7:00 pm start (12-hour shifts)
- Breaks: 1-hour lunch + two 15-minute breaks
- Scheduling: Travelers provide availability; flexibility required (no guaranteed block scheduling)
- Attendance: Excessive call-ins can lead to termination
