Job Overview

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is seeking Specialized Registered Nurses to support inpatient, outpatient, acute, critical care, and specialty units at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center in Charleston, SC. Nurses will augment VA clinical staff and provide direct patient care across multiple service lines, including COVID-19 units.

Refusal to care for COVID-19 positive patients or Patients Under Investigation (PUI) may result in removal from the assignment or contract.

Units / Specialties May Include

Inpatient Psychiatry / Mental Health

Shift & Schedule

Shift Length: 12-hour shifts
Day: 7:30 AM – 8:00 PM
Night: 7:30 PM – 8:00 AM
Weekends & Federal Holidays: Required (alternating preferred)
Shifts per Month: Approximately 13–15 per FTE
Credentialing / Onboarding: 6–8 weeks

Key Responsibilities

Provide direct patient care in assigned specialty unit
Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care
Administer medications and treatments per VA protocols
Respond to medical and psychiatric emergencies
Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams
Maintain accurate clinical documentation in VA systems
Follow VA, Joint Commission, and federal healthcare standards
Comply with infection control, safety, and privacy policies

Required Qualifications

Active, unrestricted RN license (any U.S. state or territory)
Graduate of an ACEN / CCNE / ANCC-accredited nursing program
Minimum 2 years of recent experience (within the last 3 years) in the assigned specialty
Must have worked in the specialty within the last 6 months

Specialty-Specific Experience Requirements

Psych RN (Inpatient):
- 2+ years inpatient psychiatric experience

Certifications Required

BLS (AHA) – Required
ACLS – Required for critical care roles
CPR competency required for all staff
