CU Registered Nurse (MICU / SICU / Neuro ICU)

Unit Overview

  • Unit Type: ICU (Medical ICU / Surgical ICU / Neuro ICU)
  • Number of Beds: 20
  • Average Daily Census:
    • Current: 16–17 patients/day
    • Pre-COVID: ~14 patients/day
  • COVID Capability:
    • 6 rooms can be designated for COVID patients if needed

Patient Ratios

  • ICU: 1:1–2
  • Stepdown: 1:3
  • Unit supports Stepdown needs for the facility
  • Tele does not titrate drips
  • PCU present but not a traditional Stepdown unit

Certifications

Required:

  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • PALS
  • NIHSS

Preferred:

  • TNCC

  • EPIC

Staffing & Support

  • Charge Nurse / House Supervisor:
    • Designated Charge Nurse available 24/7
    • Intended to be free charge; may take 1 patient if necessary
    • Responds to all Rapid Responses and Codes
  • Nurse Aides / Support Staff:
    • Capstone students (education support)
    • Nursing students (observation only)
    • Nurse externs assigned to specific staff (not counted in staffing)

Scheduling

  • Shift Length: 12-hour shifts (7:00 AM–7:30 PM / 7:00 PM–7:30 AM)
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
    • Days: Saturday / Sunday
    • Nights: Friday / Saturday
  • Holidays:
    • Travelers generally not scheduled unless necessary
  • Scheduling System:
    • Kronos used for schedule requests
    • Clinical Coordinator builds schedules
    • Manager approval required
    • Schedules posted at least 2 weeks in advance (4 weeks at a time)
    • Block scheduling allowed if stated in contract (nights typically blocked)
  • Work Week: Sunday – Saturday

Floating

  • Travelers typically do not float outside the ICU
  • Permanent staff may float
  • Exception: Travelers on float pool assignments

Orientation

  • Day 1: General hospital orientation
  • Unit Orientation:
    • 1–2 shifts with a preceptor
    • May report to unit early if hospital orientation ends early

Equipment & Technology

  • Telemetry / Monitoring:
    • Philips cardiac monitors
    • No monitor techs
    • Central monitor station with hardwired rooms
    • Monitor, ventilator, and device data flows directly into EPIC
  • IV Pumps: Braun IV pumps
    • All standard ICU drips
    • Includes moderate conscious sedation
  • Ventilators: Servo & Hamilton
    • Managed 100% by Respiratory Therapy
    • RN may silence alarms after notifying RT

Clinical Support Services

  • Respiratory Therapy: In-house 24/7
  • Pharmacy: In-house 24/7
    • Unit-based during the day
    • Omnicell system
  • IV Team: None

Providers

  • Day Shift: Pulmonary Critical Care Intensivist in-house
  • Night Shift: Hospitalist in-house

Dress Code

  • Scrubs: Navy blue
  • Jackets: Navy or white
  • Undershirts: White or navy
  • Hair: Natural hair colors only (no pink/blue)
  • Tattoos: Distasteful tattoos must be covered

Common Diagnoses & Patient Population

  • MICU / SICU with some cardiac acuity (CCU-level)
  • Post–Cath Lab patients
  • Balloon pumps (limited; usually assigned to perm staff unless traveler has experience)
  • Ventric drains (no bolts)
  • No Open Hearts
  • No CRRT
  • Thoracic surgeon on-site twice monthly (every other Thursday)
