Labor & Delivery Unit Overview

Unit Details

  • L&D Beds: 9
  • OR Suites for C-Sections: 2
  • Triage Beds: 7
  • Birth Volume:
    • ~9/day
    • ~250/month
    • ~3,000/year

Staffing & Ratios

  • AWHONN Guidelines: Attempted
  • Typical Ratios:
    • 1:1 or 1:2 (2 patients is common)
  • Charge Nurse: Yes — free charge every shift
  • Support Staff: OB Techs

Certifications Required

  • BLS
  • NRP
  • AWHONN Intermediate or Advanced

Patient Population

  • Gestational Age: 28 weeks and above
  • Common Diagnoses:
    • Hypertension
    • High-risk pregnancies
  • Other Notes:
    • 7–10% with no prenatal care
    • High Spanish-speaking population (Spanish a plus)
    • Tele-monitoring used

Required RN Experience & Skills

RNs must be comfortable with:

  • Vaginal exams
  • Scalp electrodes
  • Circulating C-sections
  • Newborn transitions
  • Assisting anesthesia
  • IV starts & blood draws
  • APGAR scoring
  • Postpartum hemorrhage management
  • Epidurals
  • Amnio infusions

Preferred (not required):

  • Spinning Babies experience
  • Water birth familiarity

Note: Nurses from teaching facilities must be proficient with vaginal exams.

Drips RNs Titrate

  • Magnesium
  • Pitocin
  • Insulin
  • Blood products

Providers & Equipment

  • OB & Neonatologist: In-house 24/7
  • RT Equipment:
    • Neonatal BVM
    • T-Piece resuscitator

Monitoring & Systems

  • EFM System: CPN Centricity
  • Tele Monitoring:
    • OB RNs do not read tele
    • Charge, relief charge, and select core staff have ACLS

Scheduling

  • Shifts: 6:45 AM – 7:15 PM / 6:45 PM – 7:15 AM
  • Weekend Requirement:
    • 3 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule
    • Nights: Fri/Sat
    • Days: Sat/Sun
  • Holiday Requirement:
    • 2 of 3 holidays (eve/day of)
    • Travelers must agree during interview
  • On-Call:
    • Low census only
    • Optional additional call available

Floating Requirements

May float to:

  • NICU
  • Peds
  • Women’s Services
  • Med-Surg or ICU (downgraded/RDU-appropriate assignments)

Notes:

  • L&D nurses may be assigned antepartum patients
  • Must care for baby for 2 hours post-delivery
  • If no postpartum experience, nurse will not be floated there
  • Must be prepared for antepartum care

  • Hospital-provided scrubs

Orientation

  • 1 day New Employee Orientation (NEO)
  • 1 day Clinical Education / EPIC
  • 1 day on the unit
