Shift Breakdown: 3x12 hrs
Shift: 12 hours, nights

Unit: PCU – Stepdown Beds: 11 (expanding to 12 later 2023) Ratios: 1:4 Shift Requirements & Floating: • Weekend: Every other • Holidays: Rotational • Travel staff required to float to ICU, Med-Surg Telemetry, or ED for boarded patients Required Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS Patient Population: • Post-op vascular, post-cardiac cath (PCTA or significant blockage) • Hemodynamically stable dysrhythmias, CVA, Sepsis, Renal patients, Stable acute MI, Unstable angina • ICU-level care skills required: BiPAP, CPAP, mechanical ventilation, telemetry, critical drips; CRRT & IABP preferred • Preferred: Arterial line experience, post-fem-pop, post-endarterectomy, ECAR, TVAR • Experience: 1–2 years critical care, travel experience required Drip/Titration Responsibilities: • RNs titrate drips • Common drips: Insulin, Cardizem, Heparin, Amiodarone, Low-dose Dopamine Staffing & Roles: • Charge Nurse: Assigned in PCU; ICU Charge Nurse available as resource • House Supervisor: 24/7 • PCT (CNA) ratio: 1:10; nurses assist with general care/unit clerk duties • Telemetry: Monitor tech 24/7; RNs read strips Equipment: CPAP, BiPAP, high-flow O₂, mechanical ventilation via trach, specialty beds, IV pumps Dress Code: • RN/LPN: Navy • CNA/Monitor Tech: Dark Grey/Pewter • Solid colors only; WVU Medicine or solid fleece allowed (grey, black, navy, royal blue) • Solid undershirts: white, grey, black • Closed-toed shoes only; no crocs Orientation: • First day: General hospital orientation • Full nursing orientation (RNs/LPNs) • Computer training: ½ day for CNAs, full day for nurses • Two 12-hour orientation shifts with preceptor • Abbreviated Initial Skills Checklist due 90 days from start
