Description
Job Summary: To provide safe care for patients following established standards and practices in accordance with professional and hospital standards. Contacts: Constant interaction with internal and external customers to include (but not limited to) patients, families, physicians, employees and visitors. 1. Assists in the coordination of patient care: Assists registered nurse in planning patient care. Collaborates with other health team members. Participates in performance improvement activities. Acts in the role of support during the surgical procedure but not as a surgical assistant during the surgical procedure. 2. Implements patient care: Creates and maintains asepsis. Performs scrubbing duties. Communicates patient information to the appropriate persons. Accounts for all equipment and supplies used in patient care. 3. Interpersonal skills: Communicates with peers, other health team members, patients, visitors. Maintains adaptability. Supports teamwork within the department and units. Resolves problems. Consistently meets the department's Customer Service Quality Standards. 4. Clinical preceptor: Performs clinical preceptor role for scrubbing and follows orientation outline, collaborating with the patient care coordinator, educator/Clinical Nurse Specialist. 5. Care of environment and equipment: Maintains cleanliness in unit. Maintains and cleans equipment. Held responsible for the equipment use and care in which is used during the surgical case. Performs other job duties and responsibilities as required.

Knowledge/Skills: Knowledge of organizational policies and procedures to provide patient care. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment. Skill in preparing and maintaining effective working relationships. Ability to communicate clearly. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment. Other: Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks quickly in a fast-paced environment. This position has limited access to Medication Rooms. Medications should not be handled at any time. Any questions should be directed to your supervisor or the charge nurse of the unit in question. Work Demands/Environment: Frequent standing for long periods of time, walking, bending, crouching, stooping. Frequent lifting/moving patients. Intermittent lifting, moving or carrying up to 50 lbs. Frequent pushing or pulling up to 50 lbs. Frequent use of finger/hand dexterity. Constant reaching with hands/arms and twisting. Frequent talking and/or hearing. Corrected hearing and vision to normal range. Exposure to blood, body fluids or tissue. Possible exposure to infectious materials, communicable diseases and/or other conditions common to a healthcare environment. Intermittent exposure to risk of exposure to blood-borne pathogens. Moderate to high noise level in work area. Requires work under stressful conditions, deadlines, or irregular hours. May be required to take call and/or work weekends/holidays based on the needs of the department.
Education

Must answer "yes " to one of the questions below -
Required A person may not practice surgical technology in a health care facility unless the person meets one of the following requirements:
(a) has successfully completed an accredited educational program for surgical technologists and holds and maintains the Surgical Technologist Certification administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting, or its successor; however, upon completion of an accredited education program for surgical technologists, graduates may practice for up to three months before completing certification by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting, or its successor;
(b) has completed an appropriate training program for surgical technology in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard or in the United States Public Health Service;
(c) provides evidence that the person was employed to practice surgical technology in a health care facility in this State prior to January 1, 2008; or
(d) is in the service of the federal government, to the extent the person is performing duties related to that service.
