Job Summary
The OR Cardiac Nurse is a Registered Nurse who specializes in the care of patients undergoing cardiac and cardiothoracic surgical procedures. This role involves providing expert perioperative nursing care before, during, and after heart surgeries, ensuring patient safety, maintaining sterile technique, and supporting the surgical team in high-acuity, fast-paced operating room environments.
Key Responsibilities
Perioperative Care • Assess patients preoperatively and verify surgical consent, medical history, and readiness for cardiac procedures • Provide intraoperative nursing care as a circulating nurse during cardiac surgeries • Anticipate surgical needs and respond quickly to changes in patient condition
Surgical Support • Assist cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, and surgical technologists during procedures • Prepare, maintain, and monitor sterile fields and cardiac surgical instruments • Handle specialized cardiac equipment such as heart-lung machines (in collaboration with perfusionists), pacing wires, and invasive monitoring devices
Patient Safety & Compliance • Ensure adherence to hospital policies, AORN standards, and infection-control protocols • Conduct surgical time-outs and follow Universal Precautions • Maintain accurate, timely documentation of all perioperative nursing care
Postoperative & Recovery Support • Participate in patient handoff to ICU or recovery units, providing detailed clinical reports • Monitor for postoperative complications such as bleeding, arrhythmias, or hemodynamic instability
Collaboration & Professional Development • Educate patients and families as appropriate regarding surgical procedures and recovery expectations • Participate in continuing education and cardiac surgery competency training • Support quality improvement initiatives and patient safety programs
