Job Description: Surgical Technician First Assist (Labor & Delivery):

 

A facility in Boston, MA is seeking a highly skilled Surgical Technician First Assist for a long-term assignment within our Labor and Delivery Unit (Blake 14). This role is critical in providing high-quality surgical support for obstetric procedures in one of the nation’s leading medical institutions.

 

Assignment Overview

  • Order ID: MGB-26041
  • Location: 55 Fruit St, Boston, MA 02114 (Blake 14)
  • Term: 02/08/2026 – 04/04/2026 (Long-Term Assignment)
  • Shift: Rotating (Sunday – Saturday)
    • Options: 3 x 12-hour shifts OR 2 x 12-hour shifts + 2 x 8-hour shifts.
    • Total Hours: 36–40 hours per week.
  • On-Call: No

Position Summary

As a Surgical Tech First Assist in the L&D unit, you will play a pivotal role in the surgical team, primarily focusing on Cesarean sections, tubal ligations, and other emergency obstetric surgeries. You will work under the direct supervision of the attending surgeon to provide aid in exposure, hemostasis, and other technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Surgical Assistance: Provide advanced assistance to the surgeon during obstetric procedures, including tissue handling, suturing, and maintaining a clear surgical field.
  • Aseptic Technique: Ensure the highest standards of sterile technique are maintained in the OR at all times.
  • Preparation: Prepare the operating room with necessary sterile supplies, instruments, and equipment specific to L&D.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with the nursing and anesthesia teams to ensure patient safety and efficient room turnover.
  • Equipment Management: Handle specialized surgical instrumentation and assist in the counting of sponges, needles, and instruments.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Skill Set: Surgical Tech First Assist (CFA/CSFA certification preferred).
  • Experience: Proven experience in a Labor and Delivery or high-acuity surgical setting.
  • Reliability: Ability to work a rotating schedule in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
  • Professionalism: Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary surgical team.
