Required Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years of recent acute care experience
  • Must be completed within the last 3 years in the specialty submitted (hard requirement)
• Successful completion of at least one 13‑week travel assignment
• Active Wisconsin RN license or Compact license from permanent address state
  • License must be in hand at time of submittal
• Permanent address must be more than 50 miles from the assigned primary work site
  • Local candidates are not accepted
• BLS and ACLS certifications
  • Must be through American Heart Association (AHA) only
• EPIC EMR experience required (preferred within the last 12 months)
• Experience with ICP monitoring and/or ventricular drains
• Basic Arrhythmia experience required
• Must successfully pass telemetry examination prior to start
• Flu vaccine required
  • Medical or religious exemption only

Preferred Qualifications

• Trauma Level I experience

Unit & Facility Information

• Unit: Neuro Intensive Care Unit (Neuro ICU)
• Bed Size: 18 beds
• Facility: University Hospital – Comprehensive Stroke Center
• Magnet‑designated facility and ranked #1 hospital in Wisconsin

Patient Population

• Critically ill adult neuro patients, including:
  • Ischemic stroke (post‑thrombectomy and lysis)
  • Subarachnoid and cerebral hemorrhage
  • Status epilepticus
  • Post‑operative neurosurgery (tumor resections, aneurysm clipping/coiling)
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Spinal cord injury

Schedule & Staffing

• Hours: Evenings/Nights, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
• Weekends: Every other weekend required
• Holidays: Some holidays required
• Patient Ratios:
  • Nights: 1:2
  • Weekends: 1:2
• Floating:
  • Travelers float first and may be scheduled in multiple units or facilities
  • If primary unit no longer needs coverage, shifts may be reassigned to complete the contract

Testing & Competency Requirements

• Pass/Fail telemetry testing required prior to start
• Adult Telemetry Exam Requirements:
  • 100% identification of lethal rhythms:
    • Ventricular fibrillation
    • Ventricular tachycardia
    • Asystole
  • Zero incorrect answers allowed on 3rd‑degree heart block questions
  • Minimum 80% overall score
• Pediatric Telemetry Exam Requirements:
  • Ventricular fibrillation
  • Ventricular tachycardia
  • Asystole
  • Sinus bradycardia
  • Minimum 80% score
• Attempts:
  • Two attempts allowed initially
  • If second attempt fails, certificate of completion from a cardiac rhythm interpretation course is required before a third attempt
  • Failure after three attempts will result in contract cancellation
• Telemetry competency must remain active per calendar-year requirements

Skills & Clinical Competencies

• Neuro ICU and/or Surgical ICU experience
• External ventricular drains (EVD) and ICP monitoring
• Hemodynamic monitoring (FloTrac/Vigileo)
• Hypothermia protocol / Arctic Sun
• Traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury care
• Ventilator management and respiratory support (HFNC, BiPAP, CPAP)
• Continuous IV sedation, paralytics, insulin protocols
• Titration of cardiac and vasoactive drips
• CVA and acute stroke management
• Arterial lines, central lines, PICCs, ports
• Blood product administration
• Critical care medication administration
• Post‑craniotomy and post‑neurosurgical care
