Travel RN – Adolescent Psychiatry

Location: Bronx Care Hospital Center – Grand Concourse Campus
Shift: Days & Nights (7:00 AM–7:30 PM / 7:00 PM–7:30 AM)
Charting System: Allscripts
Unit: Adolescent Psychiatry

Position Overview

Bronx Care Hospital Center is seeking a compassionate and experienced Psych RN to join their Adolescent Psychiatry Unit. This unit provides care for children and adolescents ages 5–17 in a structured, supportive environment with a strong focus on therapeutic communication and patient engagement.

Unit Details

Total Beds: 27
- Child Unit: 11 beds + 2 EOB (Extended Observation Beds)
- Adolescent Unit: 14 beds
Average Census: ~11 patients
Nurse-to-Patient Ratio:
- Days & Nights: 1:6
- Minimum of 3 RNs on the unit at all times
Length of Stay: Average ~3 weeks (some longer)

Patient Population & Diagnoses

Ages:
- Child Side: 5–11 years
- Adolescent Side: 12–17 years
Common Diagnoses:
- ADHD
- Depression & mood disorders
- Autism spectrum disorders
- Bipolar disorder
- Schizophrenia
- Intellectual disabilities
- Substance abuse history (no active detox)
Notes:
- Patients are medically stable
- No detox or rehab patients on this unit
- Emphasis on verbal engagement, connection, and eye contact rather than physical touch

Responsibilities & Support Staff

IVs: No (only in emergency/code situations)
Restraints: Rare; covered during orientation
Charge Nurse: Present 24/7 (may take assignments; travelers may charge after time on unit)
Support Staff:
- PCTs: Q15-minute rounding, EKGs, phlebotomy
- Mental Health Workers/Aides: Patient observation and engagement
Respiratory Therapy: Emergency situations only
Telemetry: None

Scheduling Requirements

Weekends: Every other weekend
Holidays: At least 1 major holiday required
Call/Standby: None
Floating:
- Travelers float first
- May float to adult psych, child psych, psych ED/crisis, detox, or rehab

Orientation

Unit Orientation: 3 days
Additional orientation provided for float units
Highly supportive manager focused on staff success

Required Certifications

BLS (AHA)
ACLS
PALS
CPI or PMCS (must be obtained prior to start)
MOAB / De-escalation Training (preferred)

Experience Requirements

Minimum 1 year of Psych RN experience
Some pediatric clinical experience required
First-time travelers welcome
BSN preferred
Seeking RNs who are patient, kind, and committed to working with children and adolescents
