RN Psychiatric Unit 2 years recent exp required NY license required

 

Required Certifications

ACLS, BLS (AHA), BronxCare Hospital Center - Grand Concourse Campus De-escalation Training, Management of Aggressive Behavior (MOAB), PALS 

  • No first-time travelers – must have prior travel experience
  • This role must be the traveler’s primary job
  • No part-time, second jobs, or block scheduling permitted
  • Per diem roles will not be accommodated around this contract
  • Any RTO must be requested and approved prior to contract start
  • Excessive call-ins are taken seriously and may result in termination
  • Travelers are expected to remain flexible and help fill scheduling gaps

 

 

Travel RN – Adult Psychiatric Unit
Location: Bronx, NY
Department: Adult Inpatient Psychiatry
Shift: Days or Nights
Beds: 26
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
Holidays: 2–3 per year (winter holidays are high priority)

Important Facility Expectations

  •  

Unit Overview

  • Adult inpatient psychiatric unit serving patients 18+
  • Common diagnoses include schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, substance abuse, major depressive disorder, and drug-induced psychosis
  • Rare detox patients
  • Nurses’ station is secured with plexiglass
  • No security stationed on the unit; security is available 24/7 in the Psych ER and rounds every 30 minutes

Staffing & Ratios

  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:6–7
  • Typical staffing:
    • Days: 4 RNs / 4 PCTs
    • Nights: 3 RNs / 3 PCTs (may increase based on census)
  • Charge Nurse/Assistant Nursing Care Coordinators present 24/7
  • Charge nurses take a full assignment
  • Travelers will not be placed in charge roles

Required Experience & Certifications

  • Minimum 1 year of inpatient psychiatric RN experience
  • Active RN license
  • Required certifications:
    • BLS
    • ACLS
    • PALS
    • One of the following crisis management certifications (required prior to start):
      • Handle With Care
      • TRUST Training
      • CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute)
      • PMCS
      • MOAB

Unit Practices

  • No IVs on the unit
  • Physical restraints used when necessary (4-point restraints; rare seclusion)
  • Home CPAP/BiPAP only, rarely used and for sleep
  • No telemetry

Support Staff

  • PCTs support patient care with:
    • Safety and room checks
    • 15-minute rounding
    • Vitals and ADLs
    • Phlebotomy (prior experience required)
    • Blood glucose checks
    • EKGs
    • 1:1 patient observation
    • Assisting nursing staff as needed

Floating Requirements

  • Travelers are first to float
  • May float to:
    • Adult Psych Units
    • Adolescent Psych Units
  • Orientation includes:
    • 1 shift inpatient psych
    • 1 shift LRC
    • 1 shift CPEP
    • 1 shift Detox

Orientation

  • 3 days of unit-specific orientation
  • Additional orientation provided for float units

Unit Culture

  • Hands-on manager present on the unit during day shift
  • Direct communication style with constructive feedback
  • Unit manages a challenging patient population
  • Staff are expected to maintain professionalism, resilience, and strong teamwork
  • PCTs may challenge new staff regarding patient care concerns; collaboration is essential

Emergency Codes

  • Dr. Armstrong: Highly agitated patient requiring medication and security support
  • Code Blue: Violent or aggressive behavior requiring MD and security response
