Microbiology Medical Technologist or MLT
Falls Church VA 22042**
Evening shift: 2:45p to 11:15p.
Job Description
This is a Microbiology laboratory position responsible for performing high complexity testing in accordance with all regulatory and departmental standards. The role includes specimen handling and processing, test analysis, result review, quality control documentation, and adherence to laboratory policies and safety guidelines.
Responsibilities
Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling processing analysis reporting and record maintenance.
Maintain records showing that proficiency testing samples are tested the same way as patient specimens.
Perform specimen analysis using approved testing procedures.
Review and release results in accordance with department procedures.
Follow CLIA HIPAA OSHA and departmental safety requirements.
Document quality control activities calibration events instrument maintenance and all corrective actions.
Follow policies when test systems fall outside acceptable performance.
Identify issues that may impact test accuracy and notify senior technologist or supervisor as needed.
Report STAT and critical values according to department protocol.
Maintain complete testing records and support general department upkeep.
Ensure reagents and kits have received dates expiration dates and opened dates when applicable.
Review and train on new procedures as required.
Attend scheduled department meetings and training sessions.
Participate in safety training and maintain knowledge of safety equipment and procedures.
Participate in regulatory inspections as needed.
Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Required Knowledge and Skills
Solid understanding of basic laboratory testing.
Ability to work in multiple computer systems and maintain accurate records.
Knowledge of quality control quality assurance and general laboratory operations.
Strong organization skills and ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
Ability to interact with other departments and occasionally with clients while maintaining patient confidentiality.
Education Requirements
Bachelor degree in Medical Technology preferred.
Bachelor degree in Chemistry or Biology accepted.
Associate degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Technology accepted.
Candidates previously qualified as technologists under 42 CFR 493.1433 also accepted.
Foreign educated candidates must present a credential evaluation from IERF.
United States educated candidates must present an original transcript.
National certification as MT or MLT from ASCP or AMT preferred.
Work Experience
Minimum one year of clinical laboratory experience in high complexity testing preferred.
National and state licensure required when applicable.
Special Requirements
Ability to prioritize work and manage several procedures at once.
Ability to work with other departments.
Good customer service skills when interacting with clients.
Must protect patient confidentiality at all times.
Schedule
Microbiology department only.
Six week rotating schedule during weekdays.
Every third weekend.
Evening shift 2:45p to 11:15p.
