Job Title: Child Life Specialist
Job Summary
The Child Life Specialist is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating psychosocial care for pediatric patients from neonatal through adolescent stages (birth to 17 years). This role provides emotional, developmental, and educational support to patients and families in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The Child Life Specialist promotes coping, reduces stress and anxiety related to illness and hospitalization, and advocates for the unique needs of children and their families using age-appropriate, developmentally supportive interventions.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess psychosocial, emotional, and developmental needs of pediatric patients and their families
- Plan, implement, and evaluate individualized child life interventions to support coping and adjustment
- Provide preparation and support for medical procedures using developmentally appropriate techniques
- Facilitate therapeutic play, education, and activities to promote social, emotional, intellectual, and physical development
- Support family-centered care by educating and guiding families through the healthcare experience
- Advocate for pediatric patients and families to ensure their emotional and developmental needs are addressed
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to integrate psychosocial care into the treatment plan
- Document patient interactions and progress in the medical record according to policy
- Support patients across inpatient and outpatient settings
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
- Minimum one (1) year of experience in a healthcare or pediatric-related setting
- Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS) credential required
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
- Ability to work effectively with children, adolescents, and families in a healthcare environment
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Child Life, Child Development, Psychology, Education, or another health-related field
