Title: Labor & Delivery RN 

A Labor and Delivery Nurse provide specialized nursing care to women during labor, childbirth, and the immediate postpartum period. This role involves monitoring maternal and fetal well-being, administering medications and pain management, assisting with deliveries and cesarean sections, and responding quickly to obstetric emergencies. The Labor and Delivery Nurse supports patients and families emotionally and physically, collaborates closely with physicians and interdisciplinary teams, and ensures safe, high-quality care throughout the birthing process.

Key Responsibilities:

• Monitor maternal vital signs, labor progress, and fetal heart rate patterns
• Assess patients throughout labor and identify complications or deviations from normal
• Administer medications, IV fluids, and pain management interventions (including epidurals)
• Provide continuous labor support and patient advocacy
• Assist physicians and midwives during vaginal deliveries and cesarean sections
• Recognize and respond to obstetric emergencies such as fetal distress, hemorrhage, and preeclampsia
• Perform and document cervical exams and labor assessments
• Educate patients and families on labor, delivery, and postpartum expectations
• Maintain accurate, timely documentation in the electronic medical record
• Prepare and maintain labor rooms, equipment, and sterile supplies
• Provide immediate newborn care and support skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding initiation
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams including OB providers, anesthesia, and neonatal staff

• Ensure compliance with safety protocols, infection control standards, and hospital policies
   

  Qualifications:

• Current, active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice
• Graduate of an accredited nursing program (ADN or BSN required; BSN preferred in many settings)
• Minimum of 2 years of clinical nursing experience (labor and delivery experience preferred or required)
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification (often required or preferred)
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
• Ability to interpret fetal heart rate monitoring and labor progression
• Strong assessment, critical thinking, and clinical decision-making skills
• Ability to respond effectively to obstetric emergencies
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to provide compassionate, patient-centered care in high-stress situations
• Physical ability to stand for long periods and assist with patient positioning and transfers
