Description
Job Opportunity: Operating Room Registered Nurse (OR RN)
Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Details
- Specialty: Registered Nurse (Operating Room)
- Required Years of Experience: 3 years (minimum)
- First Time Travelers: Accepted
- Prior Travel Experience: Not explicitly required
- Certifications Required:
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA or RQI acceptable
- Trauma Level I Experience required (minimum 1 year in Level 1 trauma; total experience screened > 2 years)
- Circulate required; Scrub preferred
- License Requirements:
- Must have an active Indiana RN license before submission (pending licenses not accepted)
- On-Call Requirement:
- 6 call shifts in a 6-week period (can vary)
- Shift Details:
- Guaranteed hours: 8 and 10-hour shifts totaling 40 hours/week, or
- 3 shifts of 12 hours totaling 36 hours/week, or
- 4 shifts of 12 hours
- Floating: Clinician will float within scope to meet facility needs (except CV & Transplant)
- Holiday Work: Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays
- Local Candidates: Accepted (with a pay adjustment for in-state residents)
- Scrubbing: Candidates must be willing to scrub

- Core 3 & 4: General Surgery, Plastic, Gynecology, ENT, Trauma, Neuro, Orthopedics, GU, Colorectal Robotics
- Average Daily Census: 70-80 patients

Required Documentation & Compliance
- Valid Driver’s License or Passport (clear copy)
- Background Checks (within 30-90 days of start):
- Criminal, SSN Trace, Sex Offender, FACIS Level III, Education Verification, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG
- Education Verification (may be pending at start but must be obtained)
- Physical Exam (within 12 months of start)
- Fit Mask Test (within 12 months) with approved respirators (3M N95 models or Honeywell N95)
- Immunizations and Titers:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (preferred but not required)
- Negative TB test or Chest X-Ray (within 1 year)
- Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
- Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination required
- Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations or history accepted
- Seasonal Flu Vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required for flu season (9/30 - 3/31)
- Drug Testing: Negative 10 Panel Drug Screen within 12 months
- Competency Exams: Medication/Pharmacology, Unit Competency Exam, Color Blind Testing (Ishihara or equivalent)
- References: Minimum 2 from recent employment with supervisory titles
- Skills Checklist: Required within 12 months and annually
- Employment Application: Must be current and explain any gaps over 30 days
- Facility-Specific Forms and Orientation Packets: Must be completed as a priority prior to start
- Mandatory RRT Modules (only for RRT candidates)
Additional Notes
- IU Health will not allow Indiana RN travelers to work at their facilities effective 11/30/2024, except for Perioperative/OR RN travelers, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers who are exempt and allowed to work past this date.
- OR RNs are expected to be well-rounded and current in most areas except Cardiovascular and Transplant, as they will float where needed.
- Scrubbing is preferred but circulating is required.
- Candidates must be willing to scrub and float within their scope.
This position is ideal for experienced OR Registered Nurses with trauma experience who are flexible, willing to scrub, and able to work varied shifts including holidays and on-call.
