Description
Critical Access Facility in Devils Lake, ND is seeking an experienced Emergency Department RN for a 13-week travel contract in a critical access hospital setting. This role involves providing direct, high-quality nursing care in the ED while coordinating interdisciplinary patient care, facilitating safe discharges, and maintaining age-appropriate knowledge and skills. The nurse will perform thorough assessments, develop individualized plans of care, respond promptly to changes in condition (including early warning signs and emergencies), manage pain, and ensure accurate documentation and communication. Emphasis is placed on patient/family education, discharge planning from early in the stay, and delegating tasks appropriately within scope. Ideal for adaptable RNs comfortable in a smaller, rural ED environment serving a diverse patient population with a strong focus on safety, quality, and customer service.
Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive assessments of patients' physical, psychological, social, educational, developmental, and rehabilitative needs based on age, background, and individual factors to develop and implement tailored plans of care.
- Conduct daily patient rounds to ensure quality service, identify unmet needs, and coordinate timely interventions.
- Assess and manage pain, monitor for early signs of deterioration, intervene or initiate emergency measures as needed, and contact appropriate clinicians promptly.
- Report observations/reactions accurately to the multidisciplinary team, complete incident reports before shift end, and ensure referrals/interventions are made without delay.
- Begin discharge planning and patient/family education as early as possible to optimize understanding and safe transitions home.
- Assign/delegate nursing interventions to qualified team members within their scope, competence, and experience.
- Maintain open communication, utilize educational opportunities with patients/significant others, and document all care per policy.
Shift
- 12-hour shifts (36 hours/week guaranteed)
- Primarily nights or rotating (specific shift details confirmed during offer; typical for rural ED coverage)
Qualifications
Required:
- Active North Dakota RN license (or compact) or temporary license accepted prior to start; unencumbered license required by start date
- BLS, ACLS, PALS (American Heart Association) prior to start
- TNCC and ENPC (upon qualification into course; facility supports completion)
- Experience in Emergency Department nursing (acute care setting preferred for critical access)
Preferred:
- Prior critical access or rural hospital ED experience
- Strong assessment, emergency response, and patient education skills
Schedule:
- 3x12-hour shifts (36 hours/week)
- Weekend and holiday rotation as required (typical every other or per unit needs in small facility)
- 13-week contract
- Other duties as assigned to meet department/organization needs
