Description
Select Specialty Hospital in Kansas City, KS is seeking experienced RNs for a Long-Term Acute Care (LTAC) travel contract. This role centers on maintaining high-quality, patient-centered care by following individualized nursing care plans for medically complex, chronically critically ill patients requiring extended hospitalization. Nurses supervise LPNs, CNAs, and orientees while embracing Select Medical's core values of superior quality, treating others well, results orientation, teamwork, resourcefulness, and an unwavering focus on patient and employee safety (10 Foot Circle of Safety). Emphasis is placed on comprehensive assessments, rehabilitation participation, patient/family education, early discharge planning, accurate documentation, interdisciplinary communication, and cost-effective care delivery in a supportive, team-oriented environment. Minimum 2 years bedside clinical experience required; BLS mandatory, ACLS required prior to first shift (specific to certain locations like CIRH—confirm for this site).
Responsibilities
- Perform nursing assessments on all patients within 8 hours of admission to establish individualized care plans; identify teaching needs and goals in collaboration with patient/family and interdisciplinary team.
- Utilize the nursing process (assess, plan, implement, evaluate) for direct patient care, prioritizing patient/family education and using a positive, encouraging approach to support rehabilitation goals and quality outcomes.
- Document accurately and timely in the medical record; provide succinct patient status updates for initial and weekly team conferences.
- Initiate discharge planning from day of admission and begin patient teaching in preparation for discharge.
- Communicate changes in patient status promptly to physicians, charge nurse, and care team; seek senior consultation for complex decisions and ensure continuity/safety through effective handoffs.
- Supervise, direct, train, and delegate appropriately to LPNs, CNAs, and orientees; assume charge responsibility as requested after orientation.
- Promote safety across all areas (safe patient handling, infection control, materials handling, slips/trips/falls, work environment); report hazards immediately and adhere to hospital policies on appearance, attendance, and punctuality.
- Contribute positively to unit function through calm leadership, team building, and monitoring supplies/charges for cost-effective, high-quality care; pursue ongoing professional development.

Qualifications
Required:
- Active Missouri (or Kansas, depending on exact facility) RN license (or compact)
- Minimum 2 years bedside clinical experience (LTAC, ICU, step-down, or acute care preferred for complex patients)
- BLS Certification (prior to first shift)
- ACLS (required prior to first shift; confirm if location-specific like CIRH applies)
- Strong supervisory, assessment, critical thinking, and documentation skills
Preferred:
- LTAC or long-term acute care experience with ventilator/trach/PEG management
- Previous charge nurse experience
- Familiarity with interdisciplinary rehab-focused care
Schedule
- 3x12-hour day shifts (36 hours/week)
- Weekend and holiday rotation as per unit needs (typically every other or similar)
- Potential for charge duties after orientation
