Description

Job Summary

The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the decontamination, cleaning, assembly, packaging, sterilization, storage, and distribution of reusable surgical instruments and equipment. This role ensures compliance with infection control standards and supports patient safety and operating room efficiency.


Key Responsibilities

Core Duties

  • Perform decontamination, inspection, assembly, packaging, and sterilization of surgical instruments.
  • Operate and maintain sterilization equipment including steam autoclaves and gas plasma (STERRAD) systems.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of sterilization loads and equipment maintenance.
  • Ensure proper sterile storage and distribution of instruments.
  • Monitor daily surgery schedules and prepare instrumentation accordingly.
  • Work collaboratively with OR staff to ensure timely availability of sterile supplies.
  • Reprocess reusable patient care equipment (PCE) per hospital policies.
  • Quarantine and remediate defective or contaminated equipment.
  • Maintain compliance with infection control, OSHA, and regulatory standards.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Maintain confidentiality and follow hospital dress code and identification policies.
  • Participate in quality improvement and performance initiatives.
  • Attend in-service training and staff meetings.
  • Report equipment failures or hazards immediately.
  • Lift, transport, and handle surgical trays (up to 45+ lbs).

Required Qualifications

Experience

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in Sterile Processing / Central Sterile / SPD within a hospital setting.

Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

Certifications (Required)

  • CRCST or RCST (Certified/Registered Central Service Technician).

Preferred Certification

  • CIS – Certified Instrument Specialist.

Skills

  • Knowledge of sterilization processes and infection control standards.
  • Basic computer skills (Word, Excel, documentation systems).
  • Strong attention to detail and communication skills.
  • Ability to work in fast-paced, high-volume environments.
  • Ability to lift, push, and pull 45+ lbs.
